    vista!

Ok, I just upgraded my computer, got a new motherboard (ASUS M2N-e, non sli, 570 chipset), processor (AMD X2 4800+), RAM (2GB kingston DDR2 PC2 3800), and hard drive (300gb maxtor i think). Well, my problem is Vista. Its giving me sooo many problems. I used vista before I upgraded, and it worked perfectly. Now, everything locks the computer up. Stuff (firefox, IE, windows updater, etc) randomly crash, and the only way to do anything is to reboot the computer. I FINALLY got my windows updates installed, hoping that would help, but no. I try to install the nforce drivers, and even if the install finishes, when I boot back up, I get a blue screen of death, and have to repair. My BIOS is the latest version. I dont know what else to try... Any suggestions?

Oh yea, I do have XP Pro to install IF I cant get it working... But one of the reasons I upgraded was for better Vista Performance.

If you want stability, Windows 2000/ Server 2003...
If you want hardcore stability, Linux.

    No kidding.

Give filenames, errors, memory addresses, etc.

Heh, heh... I figured out the BSOD.. had to do with royal.sys and my "activation" of vista. Reinstalled, now trying to see if that was causing everything else too.

    Re: vista!

    If that doesn't help:
The BSOD error is caused by the Update from Microsoft named
Nforce4 PCI-Express Root Port (also included in Nvidia drivers).

This is a guide to solve the problem:

    1. If you got the BSOD, find a way (safemode or dualboot)
to rename the file in \windows\system32\drivers\royal.sys to royal2.sys

    2. Your should not get the BSOD the next time you restart.
Go to Control panel -> Device Manager.

    3. Under System Devices you should see the Nforce4 PCI-Express Root Port.

    4. Right-click and choose Properties.

    5. Under the Driver tab choose Roll Back Driver.

    6. BEFORE you restart rename \windows\system32\drivers\royal2.sys back to royal.sys

    7. Restart now and it should be activated!

err, it could be that your video card is not supported by vista, directx 10 and such.

I had a similar problem with a friend's pc, the culprit was a unsupported nic card running vista. Would crash the computer constantly. Had to downgrade to xp.
