    Fallacies

In light of all the wonderful debates we have had as of late, i give to you this:

    http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/

Maybe now the intoxicating stench of idiot will fade away.

    even though i've made some fallacies to ; ;

    Ad Ignorantiam:

As a final example, in most cases the burden of proof rests on those who claim something exists (such as Bigfoot, psychic powers, universals, and sense data).

I've made this one alot, Circumstantial Ad Hominem:

A Circumstantial ad Hominem is a fallacy in which one attempts to attack a claim by asserting that the person making the claim is making it simply out of self interest. In some cases, this fallacy involves substituting an attack on a person's circumstances (such as the person's religion, political affiliation, ethnic background, etc.).

One can always hope, but rampant Idiocracy is a tried and true way of consciousness for many people within our species. I don't see it going anywhere, anytime soon. Only through the rapture will the stench then fade.

    lollrapture.

    Re: Fallacies

internet debate is mostly about who screams loudest or zings the other with a witty turn of a phrase. It is seldom based on logical arguments. no one takes debate classes anymore, and majors which you would learn this are not 'marketable' so less people take them. Making all sorts of logical fallacies is not a reason to stop arguing over the internet, but just keep in mind anyone who knows anything about debating and/or the subject at hand will think you ridiculous... if only silently without responding, like me. I don't bother pointing them out because it will only add fuel to the fire, and often times people accuse you of not responding to their arguments, but getting into 'semantics' (even though it IS very relevant that they can't string together a position cogently).

I'll admit, when I was still a teenager I would get embroiled in flame wars too and no doubt make the same logical mistakes I see others make. If it wasn't for my friend who was a philosophy major, who enlightened me of this (although within the context of proving/disproving philosophy), I would wouldn't know heads or tails of it. I borrowed his textbooks and also did a lot of reading online (wiki is a good starting point). I applaud OP for trying to bring this to people's attention, but I doubt it'll have any effect on the masses.

Most of us took philosophy 101 in college, no thanks.

Internet debates are for fun. If you don't like them, simply avoid them. It is pretty clear when a thread is argumentative.

I suggest you make a real debate thread and watch how bad it goes. Make sure you define rules of evidence and the like

There is a small percentage of people you can get into a real "debate" with. Some facts you may have missed or an insight you haven't though of - even in an internet debate.

The problem is it's so hard to resist calling out the assholes when they say something stupid and watching them trip all over themselves trying to play catch up of defend a fallacy. And there's nothing wrong with adding some punchline and zestful witticisms to an internet debate when it's due

A majority of the people aren't able to make valid argument, they always skip one step or two in their reasoning and confuse their bias with reality. But meh...that's how it works on the internet. Whoever has the best insult win the "argument".

    Re: Fallacies

Most political arguments are one, or if your lucky all three, no matter where they are "discussed".

I wish our presidential debates consisted of actual live debates, not the bullshit we get told is a debate today. How did fancy question and answer sessions become the norm?

Its the terms they agree to, neither wants to look like a fool. And its pretty easy to look unpolished in something as dynamic as a real debate.

Presidential candidates having a real debate? I'd pay to see that.

If you want a healthy dose of logic, sign up for the LSAT and see how you do, granted it isn't entirely accurate to your ability since it's timed or maybe English isn't your first language or you have a learning disability..

Come to think of it, fuck it, don't take it.
