I am curious, have any Aegis holders actually tried meritting/burning on PLD? I know most Aegis holders here on BG have multiple jobs, but I am just wondering if it's any good/fun, rack up decent exp, ect.

Why would you use a shield in exp? You want exp right? >_>Originally Posted by Larsa
Sub /nin break out the haste/acc gear and whatever swords strike your fancy and have at it.
Aegis' block rate is very nice, I imagine if you had hate on you, you'd gain TP pretty fast. Throw a double attack weapon ontop of it, and you're doing pretty nicely.
I actually prefer burning on pld/war to pld/nin and shield tanking; i've noticed my damage is actually better.
It's decent, but I still prefer Justice/Joyeuse over it.
However, in a thiefburn party where hate is always on you, you'll get very nice exp on the GC camp, provided you have a non-lazy healer.

PLD in my LS with Aegis uses Hauteclaire+Joy for meripo if he ever comes PLD.. but normally he's on his Adaberk+Ridill WAR.
Yeah but your Vorpals will suck :\Originally Posted by Yutuyu

DA proc on WS, more STR, Berserk, and an attack bonus trait you don't get with /nin.
I still don't see how a D35 base weapon can beat a D52 or something base weapon on WSs, regardless of DA/zerk
Ninjedit: Unless the DA got really lucky, otherwise meh =_= averages look like they should be better ;3 not to mention with an offhand weapon you're sitting at a 5 hit vorpal already :#
Oh, it won't. Joytoy doesn't beat Company/Joy on WS damage.
But you hit a lot faster so you WS a lot more. Look at it this way.
I can't remember it offhand so Delay will donate Joyuese's delay.
Joytoy attacks on average of 1.5 times a round (assuming a 50% DA rate).
Assume for simplicity sake that the mainhand weapon has the same delay as Joytoy. Then the delay per combat round for Sword/Joytoy is going to be 2Delay*.85 (or *.80 if you have suppa). Easiest to go with the *.80 case, which means, your delay on both swings is 1.6*Delay.
Lets look at a time of of 16*Delay.
You will get 10 attack rounds in that time fron the /nin sword/joy setup. Of which, you will get 10 strikes with the man sword, and 15 with the sub. Giving you a total of 25 hits.
In 16*Delay, the Joyuese will attack 24 times.
However, the above calculations assume that the wielder is using a Suppa (without it Joyuese actually hits faster), take into account the damage bonus you get from using a Sentinel's shield, the fact that this attack speed boost doesn't take into the double attack trait firing, and that colibri are pierce weak, so the 35 damage is subject to a 25% damage bonus.
And actually the effect is much more dramatic when you consider that company has higher delay, so it *really* slows down attack speed. I'll do the actual math in a moment.
Company Sword: 264 Delay
Joyeuse: 224 Delay
Sentinel's Shield: 1% Haste
Delay of Company + Joy + Suppa = (264 + 224)*.80 = (488)*.8 = 390.4
Delay of Joy + Sentinel = 221.76
Take 3904 worth of "delay time"
Company + Joy + Suppa = 10 Combat rounds, 25 attacks
Joy + Sentinel = 17.6 Combat rounds, 26.4 attacks
23.5 attacks without suppa on joy/company, by the way.
And Justice Sword is really the way to go if you have one.
Justice + Joy + Suppa = 236 delay + 224 = 460 delay *.8 = 368
Or 10.6 attack rounds, which comes out to 31.8 attacks for Justice/Joy.
Company Sword has a base damage of 46 during Weapon Skills. If the latent were active during WS, we'd be looking at a much better sword combination for pld/nin. However, J/J still beats the crap out of C/J because of sheer TP hax. I have yet to find a melee able to out-TP my paladin (cept Ridill wars, of course). The power of J/J relies on Haste and Haste alone. If your rdm or whm doesn't haste you, the other DDs are going to outdamage you badly and then they'll begin with the "lolpld" comments. However, a hasted pld/nin with proper haste gear will cockslap other DDs in TP gain (and WS#).I still don't see how a D35 base weapon can beat a D52 or something base weapon on WSs, regardless of DA/zerk
I usually equip Aegis every 4 minutes 10 seconds for an extra 230~ damage (only after a WS so I don't lose a lot of TP, duh), but other than that, I also prefer pld/nin J/J for buffer parties. I merit on my nin xD;
I do remember shortly after a Pld on my server got Aegis, was talking too him about it against exp mobs.
He brought up that with Phalanx II, he was blocking T mobs for 0.
Not a bad hax, but for kill it fast, kill it now, J/J would probably be your best bet.
Did -not- know that the damage gets reduced back down to D46, that's interesting. That really explains why a PLD friend of mine was WS'ing better with a Bayard's Sword than with Company, ok XDOriginally Posted by Seedz
I waas just joking about WSs sucking with Joytoy opposed to Company, didn't think C/J would completely outparse J/shield solo, and didn't expect there to be full maths explained to me XD
Hmm I stepped into this thread late.
For me, Ill be going PLD/WAR with my Aegis/Excalibur. But thats because I have an Excalibur.
PLD/WAR > PLD/NIN if and only if you have an Excalibur from my extensive testing with LS only pts. You bleed out so much more additional effect without having to worry about waiting for your offhand to take it's turn.
If you didn't have an Excalibur, I would go Justice/Joyuse. The closest I've ever been almost out parsed by another PLD/NIN was with my own J/J setup. This was back when I was testing all my offhand variations and putting to rest a Alla thread that claimed they could out parse me. Later I realized I would do so much more damage PLD/WAR and simply swinging Excalibur as fast as I can.
The problem and blessings of my PLD/WAR? Its like bringing a MNK/WAR to a TP burn. Sure they are going to out parse your other melees, but they are also going to be a MP sponge. Unless I can find a PT with a ridill/adam war to hold hate, I usually get it simply from swinging. If I dont get it, I can get it easily by one voke or flash. That said, I usually don't show PLD/WAR to pickup pts if I feel like I'm just going to sink mp.
Thats where Aegis will step in when I finally get it. I will be able to come /WAR without much concern over being a MP sponge. I know I will parse even HIGHER as well, simply b/c I will try and tank for the TP gain of shield mastery.
All this is said, considering I have an Excalibur. If I didn't have one, and I just had an Aegis. I would stil show up with J/J.
Something ya may want to try just for the sake of fun and doing something completely different is go to colibris with yourself on PLD/WAR with your Aegis and whatever sword you like, wear your hauby etc, and bring 4 DRG/mages with you and a BRD. It's a heck of a lot of fun, DRGs destroy the colibris, and the mp sponging that Tekki mentioned isn't a problem. Every time the paladin hits orange HP, he gets 3-4 200-400 HP heals from the wyverns for 5-7 mp each (12 for head butt if /BLU, and it does proc sometimes), and the paladin's free to do everything he wants to keep hate off the DRGs. It's ridiculous fun, especially because it's just something completely different, though no more effective than any decent burn party out there. I remember we did it with Xav when he got his Aegis and a bunch of the LS DRGs.Originally Posted by Larsa
How much does aegis shield bash do on a low def vt mob like puk/imp/colibri?
220-240 usually. It does have a damage bonus against mobs weak to blunt damage.
I'm a firm believer that Aegis "Enhanced Shield Bash" is actually Shield Bash x10, not +200. Cause if it were the latter, I wouldn't be able to pop 400+ Shield Bashes on Irucis, nor 300+ on weak-to-blunt mobs.
