    Inspiring future DRK

A while back when I asked to level war or mnk next, most people told me to just do DRK since I had a kc even though it wasn't a choice at the time XD One even said to quit the game since I leveled PUP which was super-hard mode in the ffxi. But now I decided to take DRK up since the updates on it have been very interesting and may as well put KC to good use too.

Seen some topics relating to DRK before but were rather scattered and more for endgame related. I have some questions in mind.

With the addition of /sam updates and Guillitone (sp) update, is there a point in using Great Sword at all in XP and endgame that includes sky/limbus? Of course, I'll level it up regardless for whatever reason.

What sub to use at level 1 and when do you switch to /sam? From the other post it also looks like for the endgame I mentioned that /sam would be choice for that.

Hmm, 4 merit points left for weapon, wonder if I can put it into scythe on my blm job.

Drk was my first 75 and I Still enjoy it today, even though ninja gets a lot more of my time now.

90% of time I will be /sam using scythe for merits (other 10% fort axe). There are still times where light skillchain is needed and gswrd is usefull e.g. ks99 wyrm.

If I was starting Drk again I would start off /war using gaxe till 60 (sturmwind destroys scythe ws till guillotine) I think the point most people change to /sam is 60 where u get the benefits of both hasso and meditate + guillotine, you can change at 50 for hasso but I think /war still offers more at that point (Berserk, Double attack).

As long as a 75 job has skill in a weapon it can put merits into it.

Hope u have fun with Drk.

I think you're looking for the word Aspiring.. lol.
Sub WHM at level 1 >_>
Tbh I'd use Great Axe and DRK/WAR til about level 60 because pretty much every GSD/SCY WS are bad until then. Sturmwind is the best WS you have until SCY gets Guillotine.

/thf is also good around the time you get sturmwind. SA sturmwind takes off a significant chunk of any mobs HP.

as for Gswd, its definitely worth having lvld even if you just use Scythe. Sometimes you will be asked to come /thf for hate control so its good to have it around for something like that. I prefer guillotine, but if your party needs some help controlling hate(you cant always get a good pld or nin espicially now) it should always be there. Also as said above its useful for some fights where a skillchain is helpful.

If you're PLed, sub anything 1-10. It really doesn't matter,. If you aren't PLed, sub WHM 1-10. Extra MP and spells that aren't gimp nukes helps a lot when soloing.

Once you start partying, sub MNK 10-19, sub RNG or DRG 20-29. There's zero reason to sub WAR before 30, all it gives you is voke @ /5WAR and def boost @ /10WAR. /THF gives you the gift of gilfinder and steal, which doesn't do anything for your damage, obviously. MNK sub gives you Boost (which is great for pre-WS use) and Counter if you choose to use it past 19, DRG sub gives you Jump at /10DRG, which is an extra more powerful attack every 90 seconds, RNG sub gives you acc bonus trait at /10RNG.

After 30, you can make any of DRG, WAR or THF subs work for more damage, or you can sub NIN (keep gaxe/scythe/GS, don't dual wield) if you have shitty tanks.

The very earliest I'd suggest /SAM is 50DRK for Hasso, but that's also when /WAR gets Double Attack, so I'd say it's not settled until 60DRK/SAM for Meditate. Either way, don't use /THF past 49.

About weapons, there are exactly three reasons to use a Great Sword. The first is skillchains, the second is because you already have a shitfuckload of merits into it and it's higher than your scythe, and the third is because you have a kickass GS (Algol, unlocked Subduer, Ragnorok (lol)) and, for some reason, can't find a comparable scythe (Perdu, Tredecim). Most of those probably don't apply to you, since nobody skillchains any more, you'd be an idiot for having GS merits for another job when you could merit scythe instead, and good scythes are easy to get, so use Great Axe until you get Guillotine and use Scythe after that.

One last thing, if you don't think you'll have a Perdu Sickle by the appropriate level, keep an eye out for a Tredecim Scythe on the AH. It's 50k for the best scythe short of Perdu and Apocalypse, but they don't always sell often, and Murphy's Law dictates that there'll be a shortage right when you need one if you wait.

I've only ever seen Perdu parse equal to or less than Trecedim on KI DRK forums.

    Re: Inspiring future DRK

    Too tired means I can't be bothered retyping at the moment, so I'll paste what I said in an earlier post;

I own both Tred and Perdu and have found Perdu comes out on top in situations where I have a decent amount of Haste (though I can't give you an exact number, just standard 15% from gear (Homam legs are being stingy), March and a Haste spell). The lower delay really shines when you combine it with Last Resort with Desperate Blows 3 (I know this is once every 5 minutes), all while maintaining same number of hits to 100% TP assuming you don't suck at Guillo.
Tredecim is an extremely capable scythe though, nobody will look down on you for using it.

Great Sword I wouldn't use at all really unless you really like it, maybe for HNM since Spinning Slash is a very powerful singlehit WS and /thf WSs it wins quite comfortably, but these are hardly used nowadays.

Great Axe is the best until 50 or 59, but not practical if you don't have scythe already levelled. Have fun with drk

Every 13th swing being guaranteed crit is pretty nice.

It's verrrry nice, but I would argue atk/acc boosts which also proc on WS help more than a 13th hit which can miss. They're pretty close at any rate.

Also considering the price of it (around 30k on Kujata), not bad at all lol.

I'm not saying tred is better than perdu, I know it either beats it very slightly or comes out even with it in most tests, just saying the difference is negligible. I would probably get one myself if I hadn't used most of my IS for perdu katana (which is far better than the alternatives), and spammed the rest on the millions of silver coins I use to line the warp taru's pockets.

Thanks for the informative replies. Seems I'll try Perdu Scythe first when I am high enough to use it.

I am hearing often about using G-Axe until Guillitone. But if 4 merits are put into Scythe, is G-Axe still better to use?

I used GS from 66 to ~72, found Scythe lacking in those levels til I got better gear. Can damn near one-shot imps too if you can sneak in a SC.
