Many of us were not yet born on this day 40 years ago. Irregardless, the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has impacted all of our lives through changes in American society has made since he was assasinated.

But to stay on topic, it seems when you hear someone talk and read about civil rights and how fucked up the American south used to be (It still is I know, I see it everyday) it seems like ancient times. It is hard to look at it from the perspective that it was only 30-40 years ago all this bullshit was going on. Everyone's Parents and Grandparents where there during that time and have some input and/or experiences. I have photos of my parent drinking from "Colored only water fountains", Restroom facilities etc. Not like from newspapers or anything, just from the hopes of one day kids in our time would not believe it happened. Segregated restaurants in Greensboro, Rockhill, Raleigh etc... in the surrounding Carolina area. I wish I could upload them, they are neat.

I luckily come from a family that openly talk and share their experiences of the situation and how far we've come as a society and how far we still have to go. ALL of my family are either from NC, SC, Alabama and Mississippi so I learned an awful lot by just listening. It seems so very long ago, but man 40 years, that was literally a blink in time when you think about time as a whole.

Apologies, I was intending to stay with a concise statement of my opinion. Please allow me to elaborate.

Currently, the word is accepted by many literary circles as a word, in the sense that it is an amalgamation of letters that can be pronounced by the human tongue, and possesses a perceived meaning. Most describe it as an erroneous form of regardless, or a satirical play on the evolution of human speech versus the established rules of language. Perhaps then, I should have stated that it is my opinion that 'irregardless' is not a word.

My more subtle point was that errors in spelling and grammar often detract from the point of a message. While I believe that Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man and his death was both tragic (and suspect) its much akin to a beautiful woman with a bloodshot eye. The overall statement is pleasing and the message is intact, but you can't keep your thoughts from gravitating to the one flaw.

An Addendum: Dr. King's last planned movement before he was killed was a massive civil march of the nation's impoverished citizens on Washington D.C., in the spirit of similar focused movements conducted by Mohandes K. Gandhi in India. This event never occurred. Recent events in this decade have once again brought this topic to the forefront, most of all Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath in Louisiana and Mississippi. Please make an effort to find time in your lives to make a difference to those less fortunate than yourself; if you are or have done so, thank you and keep it up.

FYI: Words aren't just any collection of intelligible sounds that the majority of the general population derives meaning from and even uses in their own speech. In fact, you can have something that 95% of the general population uses themselves on a daily basis, and it not be a word.
