can't get correct resolution to work on HD LCD TV

I just got an HP 42" LCD HDTV, and i'm trying to use it as a monitor but the resolutions aren't matching up.

It's supposed to support 1920x1080 through HDMI outputs, but when i try to use HDMI, the color is terrible and the edges of the screen get cropped out. The max resolution i can get on VGA is like 1360x768.

One of the HP techs suggested that because i'm using an DVI to HDMI cable from my video card (geforce 7800) rather than a straight HDMI to HDMI cable, that that's the reason it's showing compatibility issues.


Anyone got an idea of what i can do? Or is the tech right and i'm gonna have to go find a new video card?

I'm not sure if the 7800 has this capability, or if was introduced in the 8800 line, but anyway..

In the Nvidia Control Panel there should be an option for outputting in a HD resolution, 720p, 1080p, ect. Try enabling that and see if it helps. I've heard of this issue happening with some TVs though, it seems kind of hit or miss.

Q. What is the difference between a “Standard” HDMI cable and a “High-Speed” HDMI cable?

Recently, HDMI Licensing, LLC announced that cables would be tested as Standard or High-Speed cables.

* Standard (or “category 1”) cables have been tested to perform at speeds of 75Mhz, which is the equivalent of a 1080i signal.
* High Speed (or “category 2”) cables have been tested to perform at speeds of 340Mhz, which is the highest bandwidth currently available over an HDMI cable and can successfully handle 1080p signals including those at increased color depths and/or increased refresh rates. High-Speed cables are also able to accommodate higher resolution displays, such as WQXGA cinema monitors (resolution of 2560 x 1600).

So check the specs on your video card to be sure its DVI output is made to support HDTV hookup and resolutions.
