Connection issues

Ok my ISP has this bad habit of slowing to an absolute crawl between 3PM and 3AM, like to barely 500 kbps at times. I've replaced the modem, had the line switched, and it doesnt matter, this happens every damn time. I understand the connection should slow down somewhat on cable but no one in this neighborhood is up this late (let alone the fact that most don't have a residential cable internet connection -_-) anyway and even when it does pick up (drastically, closer to 9800 kbps) I have horrible lag spikes. Is it just safe to say that my ISP is shitting with me and the problem is on their end? If it were every hour of the day I'd think something was up on my side but it clears up the other less convenient 12 hours of the day. I'm 1 more phone call away from telling time warner to shove it up their asses.

I'd make that phone call. Time Warner sucks. I'm not sure if you're in a densely populated area or not, but if you are it wouldn't be uncommon to see the slowdown you're talking about during peak hours (even if not many people in your neighborhood use cable, the hub you connect to may service a much wider area - they have to give bandwidth to everyone). Especially with YouTube and online gaming becoming so much more popular, it's becoming all the more popular with cable to have massive slowdown during peak hours, if you google around I see a lot of posts with the same problem with Time Warner...

Get DSL, or FiOS from Verizon!

Yeah that seems like the plan, I live in a residential area of southern brooklyn so the slowdown pretty much cripples my connection till about 3AM

Basically says that TW/AOL want to charge people based on how much bandwidth they use instead of just charging a flat fee. Maybe they should look on how well that worked out for with AOL... lol what a joke

Definitely sounds like your ISP are either throttling your bandwidth with shit like Ellacoya or they simply don't have enough pipe for your area. Time to jump ship and get someone more reliable, fiber if you can.

Going to bump this and jump in with my own question.

I have verizon (not FiOS, apparently they don't offer it here right now..) and I replaced my modem or router (I only have one thing outside my tower), I don't know wtf it is about 4 months ago with my cables. So I had a problem where I disconnected a crap load every day and I called verizon so much that I memorized their phone number, replaced everything and I was fine up until a few weeks ago.

Started d/cing again and I'm pretty sure it's because the phone cord from modem/router thing to wall jack is 50 feet when they say it shouldn't be more than 15 feet. Yeah, I know, but I can't move it any closer.

Anyone know how I can fix this? It's really horrible doing dynamis, limbus, ein.. even campaign (yay no exp) when you keep d/cing...

longer ethernet cable, put your modem at the jack on a short phone cable, and run a long ethernet cable to your router/pc/whatever you plug your modem into

Sorry to ask this here but it came to mind when I heard people talking about speeds. That website says up to 6mbps speed making it sound like they say its fast, but i look at my wireless and it says 48 mbps speed. Yet my internet only downloads at 150 kbps max. What am I not understand here.

Those are marketing ploys. Basically, it tries to fool people into believing bits are bytes. Most everyone expresses connection speeds in bytes and not bits, and that's where they get you.

Bits and bytes are both a measure of amounts of data being transmitted, with one byte being equal to 8 bits. So when a ISP claims you are getting a 10 megabit (mbit) connection, you are in fact only getting 2 megabyte (MB). If you divide your 4 mbit connection by 8, you get .5 MB or 500KB/s which is your maximum speed in the measurement everyone is familiar with. Also the "up to" is deceiving, considering especially on cable internet in crowded areas, you are likely never to achieve such a download speed.

Also, when your wireless card or adapter says "48mbps" that is just the speed it's capable at transferring data speeds. It's still limited by how fast the data is getting sent by your ISP.

sales people are retarded and sell it as MB (megabyte) when its really Mb (megabit) up toos are always fun, especially when you tell your customers you're not always going to get 6Mb rates, you are only gauranteed at least 3Mb, so stfu and move down to pro if you wanna whine like a slut.... but thats just my aggression towards my job... but my ISP, i have 6Mb nearly ALL the time, but you get what you pay for
