So I’ve been a long time fan of NOVA on PBS as well as other miscellaneous shows on Discovery Channel and I’ve wanted to get some interesting material to watch outside of the usual Discovery Channel & PBS science/physics documentaries.

I like to throw these kinds of shows on while I do homework or writing a paper to help pass the time. I figure some of you out there have some interesting shows you watch/have watched that you could recommend. I've seen a ton of NOVA (PBS), NOVA Science Now (PBS), Extreme Engineering (Discovery Channel), and some other miscellaneous random stuff on Discovery Channel so if something could follow a form like those it would be desirable (if not it's still ok if it's interesting).

On a little different topic, has anyone watched 'The Elegant Universe’? It's a documentary on string theory that is around 3hrs long, it's pretty cool if you haven't watched it. Anyway, I'm expecting Woozie to jump all over this soon too so I'll check back later.

-Jao Magueijo’s Big Bang -Science channel- Controversial theories on VSL's and the formation of the Universe. I like him and have read a few of his books, if you can find it on you REALLY should check it out.

-Carl Sagan's cosmos -Always a classic. Timeless and still very intriguing.
Speaking of which go to Youtube and search for "Pale blue dot" by Carl Sagan. Equally awesome.

-Neil Degrasse Tyson on Nova, rocks like a motherfucker also.

Science channel also has a lot of programs concerning the LHC as well as shows about the Higgs Boson if you are into Particle physics.

Agreed, heh, older Nova episodes were cool but Neil seems to add a little bit of fun to it as well. I should add that I don't have cable to watch these when they air, but I could record them at home and/or buy them on DVD if it is possible. I wouldn't mind purchasing a few if they're good (sucks not having cable, at least iTunes carries a lot of the Extreme Engineering Eps).

Yes you can get alot of them from the net. You can find "Search for the God Particle" and Jao Magueijo’s Big Bang out there in the intrawebz somewhere for sure. I actually downloaded them for Woozie also, but he is Mr. iamneveronmsnlol. They are really good shows if you can track them down, Magueijo has books also if you are into physics reading but thats a story for another day as well.

I have a few more in mind but they are escaping me currently. I have had tunnel vision as of late in regards to CERN ready to kick off LHC testing. PM me your msn I can send you a list and site to view/DL them when I get off if you're interested. That goes for anyone else also.

If you go to youtube and type in "Stephen Hawking" or "Brian Greene" or something, you'll get a TON of science shows. I could sit there all day watching them, and then clicking on the related videos and such.

Also, The Elegant Universe is probably one of the best science documentaries I've ever watched. Before I watched that, I wanted to go into astrophysics, but watching that made me lean more towards particle and theoretical physics.

If you haven't read the book yet, you should. Also get "The Fabric of the Cosmos" (also by Brian Greene. And while you're at it, get The End of Physics by David Lindley.

I agree fabric of the Cosmos is an awesome read, so is the Selfish gene.

Yep. But yes you can definitely find them at Walden books or Barnes and Noble without issue, but the Library has them as well. Amazon has a lot of these for cheap also. I bought the Elegant Universe a few months ago as well as a few on String Theory. My 4 book total was only 17.00.
