Someone writing an article about how they hiked and climbed mountains so much, they missed job opportunities and social skills.
Anything can take over your life, causing you to focus so much on it that you neglect everything else. Sometimes you need help getting out of that pit; but recognize that it was your choice that put you there.
Now let's take that hiking/mountain climbing addict guy. That time isn't wasted, if he got out of it what he wanted. Same with the model plane building guy. He may have "wasted" his life building hundreds of toy planes, but if he enjoyed it, and he's happy with his life, then what's the problem?
Someday I'll quit FFXI. I won't look back on it as wasted time. I'll remember everything I've done, and that I enjoyed the journey. I spent my time doing what I enjoyed. Anything I may have missed in the meantime, is my responsibility. But I made a choice: I looked at the cost of doing various things, and I chose what I wanted to do at that time.
The OP is trying to say FFXI sucks because it takes so much time. But it only takes that time if you let it. The OP let it.
