Basically, I'm looking for the easiest method of adding some sort of remote functionality to a HTPC. Basic as in simple fast forward / rewind play pause stop volume etc. preferably in a program such as VLC.

I've looked around and most of ones I've found are ridiculously expensive and generally link in with windows media center (though they probably work with vlc too, but I'm not sure).
