[Elmer the Pointy]

This is a fun activity I would like to spread across the various forum communities and blogs related to Final Fantasy XI. There's no contest or prize involved, but I thought it would be interesting to see the kinds of accomplishments that are important to each set of players.

If you want to run this thread on your forum or blog, just make a New Thread or blog post, copy/paste this explanation from JPButton (CLICK THIS LINK), and then Pingback/Trackback the page. A link to your forum will appear, and I will manually add it to the list of all forums and blogs participating. Other visitors can then check out your list, and the lists of your forum-goers.

Anyone can participate: big forum communities, Linkshell forums, personal blogs... just Pingback and you're added! If you can't Pingback, you can e-mail me and ask to be added manually.

What is 「10大ニュース」？

10大ニュース (juu dai nyuusu), is literally a list of 10 big(大) bits of news(ニュース) or events that have happened to you over the past year.

In Japan, the end of the year is filled with parties and drinking, much more so than the beginning of a new one. As the next year fast approaches, people will hold a 忘年会 (bou-nen-kai) , or a gathering (会) to forget (忘) the current year (年). This is accomplished through copious amounts of alcohol, and often times, the telling of one's 10大ニュース. It's like a personal Top-10 list.

This list can contain any 10 events that you feel have affected you deeply, most often in a positive way. As we all close another year here on Earth, (and thus another 25 years in Vana'diel), I felt it would be fun to combine a little bit of Japanese culture with the community's penchant for touting in-game accomplishments. Everyone likes sharing their success, so here's a perfect chance!

Here's an example of what a list might look like:

You can include things that were special to you.

8. Got promoted to Sackholder in my LS

7. Convinced my friend to sign up for the game

Maybe you conquered some personal challenges, however big or small.

5. Solo'd all my Scholar Artifact quests

Perhaps endgame is more your thing.

4. Completed Relic Weapon: Claustrum

Or e-peen.

3. SOLO tanked Cerb against ally of DD's

The more creative of you out there could write from your character's point of view.

And game-related stuff is okay too

10. Moved server and joined an HNMLS full of nabs and emos who I actually ended up loving. :D
9. Capped all my merits for all my jobs and weapons.
8. Helped a lot of people and was asked for a lot of advice by fellow PUPs. (And became loved and hated by many others at the same time, dohoho.)
7. Finished Nyzul Isle with the same group I started it with. (<3 My Fruity Friends)
6. Discovered the delightful creatures Tinnin and Hammerblow, and soon learnt they are both gigantic fence fucking faggots who never drop anything.
5. Found my tru bro, brother-from-another-mother, Aeyze, luls.
4. E.Body GET!!
3. Completed 5 pieces of Salvage gear and counting. /lewtwhore.
2. Broke 2k WS DMG on PUP (Fuck you it is so an achievement).
1. Realised I might actually become a hobo forever unless they shut the servers down soon. :/

Exactly. Any 10 things that impacted you this year.

10. Became shellholder of my HNM LS, which has been running since summer 2005.
9. Finally, finally, finished PLD to 75.
8. Restarted a Dynamis LS run by our HNM LS.
7. Finished a very sexy pair of Usukane Boots.
6. Finished up Apocalypse Nigh.
5. Got my SAM a Black Tathlum and COR a pair of Oily Trousers lol.
4. Tanked Fafnir for the first time as PLD with someone else who's never tanked it.
3. Started saving up money and currency for Amanomurakumo.
2. Redid all of Nyzul Isle floors for runic disk, weapons for all jobs, and unlocked WS.
1. Met Jenesis~ Game marriage date is January 3rd.

Personal:

10. Obtained Captain rank
9. Got Lu Shang's (and fishing up to 61 now)
8. Wrote a bunch of web apps for our shell to track attendance/wishlists/members -- still a work in progress, and also have been managing/remodeling our website and forums
7. Learned more about this game than I ever have before, especially with tanking (<3 the enmity tests -- it's my tanking bible now)
6. "Solo'd" AV for the hell of it after he completely raped our LS

Major ones with my LS:

5. Started LS-only dynamis and have made it to the Northland zones as a shell
4. Got some of the first Sandworm claims/kills on server after the Doomvoid update (a ton of fun)
3. Downed Bv2 and Ouryu for the first time as a shell
2. Started LS-only Einherjar and made it to Odin

The biggest one all year:

1. Voted in as a new SH for my shell, which has kept me busier than I could possibly imagine (hence all the web stuff!).

4. Finished Zilart, CoP, ToAU, and Apocalypse Nigh.
3. Got to play with Hades' first attempt at Pandemonium Warden, which a lot of you got to see live.
2. Kinda pokes into last year a bit, but met up with my in-game boyfriend (New Year's Eve last year) and have been with him ever since.
1. Got into the endgame ls I've been wanting to get into since I knew of its existence.
