And on the other side of the coin, today is called Imbolc (or Oimelc) by the Wiccan calendar. It's called Brigit's Day in Ireland in honor of the goddess of poetry, sacred flame, brides and rebirth. In that aspect it's known a day of candlemaking and weddings. The festival was also adopted by the Catholic Church as Candlemas and Brigit (called St. Brigid) was canonized as a saint.
Among Wiccans today is the first day of spring and traditionally is used to forecast weather for the coming year, hence the association with Groundhog Day and using woodland creatures to divine Nature's will.
