Buying a 360 from a friend and I have a question

So i'm buying a 360 from a friend of a friend and I was wondering if it's possible to wipe his old gamertag/info/Credit Card info from the xbox and basically reregister it under my name.

I really don't know anything about xboxs so not sure how this could be done.

Can i do it all on the console or do i have to call xbox costomer service?
Is there a fee involved or is it free?

I would assume i could just;
1. create a gamertag for myself on the system
2. reset my tag as the default gamertag
3. erase his gamertag
4. then buy a gold membership through the console.

Will this work?

You can format the HD or just manually delete all the files off that you do not want. Easy to do yourself no need to involve customer service.
