Graphics Card Issues?

Please bare with my n00bness questions~

I recently turned up all my graphics with my ATI Control Center(SAPPHIRE 100245L Radeon HD 4850 512MB) (All the ones under 3D) and my game looks, to me amazing~

At that time I noticed whenever I did a 'roll over' type option in FireFox (like scrolling down the history list) my game/pc would get very laggy(Game would go down to 1-2FPS normal being 29-29.5FPS) if I minimized the game everything would run fine -- So for the most part it didnt bother me...Well recently Avast decided to pop up with an update while climbing Chasm mountain (I didnt fall off) but being unable to move of anything for the 20s it was poped up in my screen was to say the least VERY annoying....That said I recently started playing with Windows Sidebar and I can not have the side bar up and the game up at the same time it causes that 1FPS lag...~ The obvious answer I guess is to turn my graphics options back down But I was hoping for another alternative if at all possible~

On another note I would like my stupid card name to be in my 'display' settings for deskop resolution and not the silly 4800 series crap D:! I was told to goto the card manufacturer but I found 3 options that could be my card XD but beats the hell outa me which is which as they all look the bloody same to me!

Second off. For like the millionth time, FFXI is a CPU intensive program. It barely utilizes the GPU. GPU provides icing only for FFXI. What's your clocks like? This is a you don't have the uP or RAM to do what you want problem, not a GPU problem. A 4850 GPU isn't going to be overloaded by the desktop, a couple programs, and FFXI; even on higher settings.

Third. It should be noted that FF, while a great browser, continues to be quite the memory leak. What's your RAM usage like on various processes? How much physical is available?

The reason I blamed my video card and the reason i still feel it was my video card was because NONE of this happend before I turned everything up in the ATI Control Center and AFTER reupdating drivers it now works perfectly fine

Current CPU Load with FFXI(tav), FF(3tabs), Sidebar -- 32%-76%(Goes up as more ppl walk into view)
Current Memory Load -- 1.3GB

Hmm. 32~76% load? And all of that is from FFXI? I guess, maybe, been a while since I had a dual core, but that does seem high to me. Drivers can do that though too, which is where I would have gone next based on what you gave me. The 3.5GB reported is just because the x32 OS is putting some memory away for your video card/other hardware.


I'd still tell you to get rid of AVAST though. More hassle than its worth and better solutions out there.

It's not correct to say that FFXI "barely uses" the video card.. A decent GPU does help a lot because it helps pull some of the load off the CPU, but you have to kinda nudge it by properly tweaking the game settings in your registry.

As for the slowdowns, yeah the AV program is the most likely problem. I've even heard having an excess of USB devices plugged in can kill performance in this game.. damned if I've seen it tho since I've got practically everything on my system running USB. I'm thinking start with basic stuff - unloading unneeded programs & services from memory, defrag the HD, turn off HD indexing..
