    DBZ dubbing (Ocean, Funimation)

Does anyone here remember when they made the swap? I know it was during the Freiza saga, but at which point? I remember hearing that it was as early as vs the fight w/ Recoome, but watching the remastered series torrent, I notice that lines that I've always remembered had been changed even beyond that point.

For example, I can remember Vegeta's "HOLY COSMOS LOOK AT THAT THING" when the dragon is summoned on Namek, which was absent in the remastered (they changed the entire dialog, so he didn't even say that).

Just trying to figure out when they made the swap

Coulda asked me on MSN. It was right after the episode when Goku arrived on Namek. I remember because I watched DBZ religiously as a kid and I was so pissed when I heard the new voices.

Edit - More specifically the episode after when Goku started fighting Burta and Chase.

hmm weird. Even checked out the toonami namek saga promo ant the holy cosmos line is there and is completely gone in funi's remastered.

I also remember when Veg said to Krillin when talking about the saiyan armor "Excuse me mr hotpants", which was also removed from the remastered.

If I remember correctly the last Ocean episode was the one where Goku started to fight red haired guy, forgot his name.

Bleh just seems so weird to me.

    For example, the Ginyu fight.

    Remastered Funi:

What I remembered seeing on cartoonnetwork:

It was the episode with the ending having Goku punch Recoom in the stomach, I used to have the VHS of it. The new dubs suck balls, they even redubbed the new dubs from the Frieza saga and they suck even more. The first time I heard Krillin say "Help me" just before he died I thought sounded pretty convincing, now it's just bleh.

Same in the Vegeta saga when Piccolo got in front of the beam to save Gohan, his original scream sounded a lot more convincing.

So very much better when you watch without any kind of dubs at all.

The ocean dub was WIN (after the Frieza Saga), ok the censoring and mods suck, but the music was always so upbeat and rushing.

Watch this clip, towards the last bit where Piccolo and 17 fight one last time, and pay attention to the BGM =) (skip to 4:46) ; Funi's dub was dull and boring here. JP dub made it sound like a terrible situation. But the ocean dub? ROCK ON! :D

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hm778coRqk

Some of the other BGM does suck, and voices, but after watching so many dubs, I really liked the Ocean dub when they brought in their music from their other dubs (Megaman primarily). It works really well.

I'm actively hunting down a DVD set of the Ocean Dub, no luck so far

EDIT: Note that the ocean dub did eventually continue, despite Funi taking over after Goku arriving on Namek, however the dub was brought to Cartoon Network and aired by them instead for british viewers as far as I know.

    EDIT2: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ocean_Group

Early anime projects of the Ocean Group includes the first two seasons and three movies of Dragon Ball Z, which was contracted out to them by Funimation Entertainment. The Dragon Ball franchise was later re-dubbed entirely by Funimation's own in-house voice cast; however, the Ocean Group later made an alternative dub of DBZ that aired in Canada, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland while Funimation's dub aired in the United States, Australia and New Zealand.
So yeh! They sucked earlier but got better! Not saying this dub beats all others (not even gona get into that at all, I enjoy all dubs) but I think they did a good job.

I'm pretty sure the dbz I downloaded has the regular ginyu voice. I'm pretty sure it switches over to uncensored around episode 127.

That does make sense Deadeye, ty, but hmmm. I also remember them changing when Goku was fighting the ginyu force, but I do remember key phrases that I know were ocean (like the clip I posted earlier), which is why I've always been confused as fuck, lol.

Yea, I know Ocean dub finished out the series for Canada, was jus tcurious of when the swap was actually made. As everyone else has said here, I remember goku's voice changing when he first hit namek, but then there were still ocean phrases that I know I remembered like "THE CAPTAIN'S COMIN TO GET YOU", "Excuse me mr hot pants", "HOLY COSMOS LOOK AT THAT THING", ect that I saw on Cartoonnetwork.

17's voice was horrible in that clip , though the music was cool. From what I understand though, from Episode 54 onward, Funimation had 4 years to dub the rest of the series, where as Ocean only had 1 year, so they had to rush.

I found a torrent that has them in MKV, so they're only 50mbish/episode, 15 gigs for the entire series, and in pretty awesome quality.

Is purely funimation, though it has options for JP audio, or English Audio w/ JP music (then the English audio w/ funi music).

Correct, but fuck the subs tbh, considering anything else I could find was avi and over 200mb per episode, which would make it a fucking epicly huge download.

I re-watched the entire series over the winter, subbed by DBNL. You have to get on irc to dowload (#[email protected]), but they have pretty much every episode, you can choose which audio track you want and toggle subtitles on/off. The video is also pretty good quality.
