    FFXIV Airships

So of course as everyone has seen the FFXIV trailer, if you haven't I'm honestly confused. does anyone have any speculations or actual information about these?

it's obvious that the technology in XIV will be further along than it was in XI. They show a battle of these small (maybe personal?) machine/organic airships in battle above in the sky. what kind of role do you think they will play?

I have yet to see any topic concerning these, does it only interest me? lol

They also mention the Garlean Empire (or whatever it's called) having much larger airships. I'm guessing the ones in the trailer are more the small air-air dog fighter of the universe rather than for transportation purposes.

I'm betting at least that part is from the invasion 15 years ago, like the attack on Tavnazia as the opening for FFXI.

I assume those one man flight pod things will be used for flight paths for places that don't have crystals to teleport to.

Maybe. If choco's aren't for riding (they did say they would be used differently this game) I could see getting the fliers... but I'd rather walk (at least to start anyhow). Explore the world, not fly over it, ya know?

It's very doubtful you'll be given the option to use them if that's what they're for when you start the game anyway.

I'd have to agree, very likely they're part of the beginning intro/invasion of al migho. Don't see us getting personal flyers like WoW. Which is a good thing imo. Once you got the fast flyers in WoW, it was like the rest of the world didn't even need to exist, one second your in dalaran, the next your where you wanted to go pretty much. Made it less... i dunno... immersive i guess is the word to go with. The drakes were pretty bad ass though i'll admit

True, but level 20 came before I'd managed to explore much of the world (partly because the hubby was trying to get me closer to his level, he had started like a year before me). And I know there are places Choco's can't get to, but there are also a lot of places I always rode through, and never really saw. And after I got the airpass? Forget about it.

I run places now, just to see them.

I dunno the only reason I used my flying mount in wow was because I was forced to in Northrend. only until the recent patch was basic flying decent, I always used the flight paths.

The only reason I wanted a Choco in FFXI was because I could explore without getting attacked. I didn't use it to just get places, my whole thing for me in these games is exploration and the choco helped.

I just think you should have to do a little work to get to a high level raid... like having to climb up the riverne areas to get to monarch linn... makes it exciting (or annoying depending on intelligence level of your party members I guess >.>). Once you hit 80 the entire WoW world could be replaced by a title screen with buttons that sent you/you're raid to the instance of your choice. Though I guess the argument could be made that raids are far larger and include a (mildly) challenging run up to each boss comparitive to having to run through sky or sea... but I dunno... it just kind of annoyed me is all. Like Averrinicus... I guess I just liked the exploration.

Anyway... more speculation on video since I went and watched it again: Assuming the video is of the invasion, would that make the big sea creature/leviathan lookin thingy that Llymlaen the patron god of Limsa Lominsa?

It'd be super awesome if we got those one-manned airship things. >.>; Talk about mass freedom.

I can see battles being held on those much like U/O fight. SE was so damn proud of that fight - a battle on an airship, how grand! - and everyone else spooged over it too (except me I guess, it was cool I suppose...) I'm sure those types will be combat-oriented. If we get any airship for travel it will most likely look more like a passenger vehicle: cozier and not as dangerous looking. Personally I don't care about airships that much, I'm hoping for a flying animal to ride, but I doubt we'll get that.

If you want more references to airship design in 14, just take a look at the basic design of the ones in 12, I doubt they'll differ all that much.

A little work is fine. Even travel, sure. As long as it's not total BS like Uleguerand Range and its "You just wasted 20 minutes of your life because we hid an invisible hole inside the cliff edge! Haha" style of play.

Or Attohwa Chasm's "Your feet were not at a 37 degree angle when you attempted that turn so you fall off the fucking mountain, try again."

I found the whole having to run places pretty annoying at times, it's one of the reasons I never really bothered with most ENMs unless I was extremely bored or was broke heh. I think my experience was mostly ruined by people getting mauled in Ulegeuerand, people being 100+6 in crafts and being too much of a cheapass to buy some fucking sneak/invis, people not knowing what fucking TRUESIGHT means. It was annoying and tedious more than anything to be honest.

If Final Fantasy 14 had raids (or dungeon crawls I would prefer, spend a couple hours going through a dungeon to get to the big boss baddie at the end with the shinies) then I wouldn't mind. But when it takes more fucking time to get to the place than it does for the event you're going for, (Ulegeurand ENM Brothers, takes fucking 30-45 mins to get there for a 5 minute fight) then it's just silly. Exploration is great and all, but not when it's forced and poorly implemented. It just felt like a lot of things in FFXI were there just to make you waste time, especially 15 minute fucking airships. I hope getting around is easier this time around.

I felt like personal super flying mounts in WoW were the same thing for people like me who had badass chocobos and outpost warps. In WoW if you work to get the thousands and thousands of gold for your epic flying mount you are rewarded by being able to go almost damn near anywhere pretty fast. In FFXI if you work to get a razor red chocobo with max speed, gaiters/crimson legs (optional), and all your outposts, you are rewarded by being able to go almost damn near anywhere pretty fast. It's the same shit.

Am I the only one who thought the Airships looked like letter-openers with wings? :/
I hope they make something a tad more appealing, even if we're not able to pilot it.

I supposed airship battles are possible, even with a zone system (Hell, porbably more doable that way), but I think it's more likely that most of it will be NPC driven. In any case, all I really want, as far as airships are concerned, is the ability to board an enemy vessel and fuck shit up. Yes, like Prishe in U/O, but you actually have to force yourself to jump (instead of it being a scripted event) and you work your way up to the bridge to to put the nail in the coffin before jumping off the exploding ship.

    Like a Bawce.

Giving yourself or your allies specific objectives would be cool too; like instead of just fucking shit up, one group goes to the bridge, one group goes to engineering, while the last frees prisoners. Or maybe you have to sneak on, and/or steal something important, then sneak off without being noticed...or then blow the fucker up.

Omg that would be so epic. Just had a vision of going through the ship with you group and getting attacked by a bunch trash mobs as you try to make your way to where the Captain is. Of course you can just bypass the trash and run straight for the captain and then fight them all at once. That would be so pro.

    Hijacking airships LIKE A BOSS.

Too lazy to look around now. But i think i read in an interview that those airship fights were just there to make the players go "ZOMG WTF KEWL AIRSHIP FIGHTS D00DS" over the trailer lol.
