really interested in playing this, but i am on a icc raiding team in wow and also have an xbox which i abuse.
how are you blue garterers liking aion? does the population seem viable for a decent-length run?

Not sure how it is now, but it was infested with botters, kineh buyers, lopsided pvp and a horrible grind before I left at lvl 49. I looked ahead to 50 and decided there wasnt really anything worthwhile end game except grinding 1 dungeon or pvp grinding, but since I was an assassin, option 2 was kinda meh.
If you're enjoying WoW, you're not going to like Aion any better. Most of the people I know of who came from WoW left after playing for a month or two, and the general population's feeling toward the game seems to be "I'm leaving as soon as something better comes along, or my subscription runs out".
Assuming you're interested in the game because of flight, you should know that all it boils down to is melee classes being useless in PvP in any zone where people can open their wings.
not worth it
The game has potential if they fix some of the major flaws. If you're truly interested, I'd put Aion on your "check back this summer" list.
ffxiv beta will be out by then kekekekeke
This game needs a HUGE update... there's only 5 zones to level in... I have been to zones that look similar to get to lvl 43. (poeta, Elten, themembos(?), Reshenta and Heiron). I stopped my subscription today because of this. I'm bored or the steel rake instance, and I'm tired of Elyos owning 1 fort a month when i turn up to every raid.
Our top 3 legions total up to around 130m AP... the asmo total up to around 250m...
waaabulance etc etc
blahblahwhinehwine.
Game is good if you're at 50 and enjoy big pvp fights.
If you want a PVE mmo aion is NOT for you.
i find it really fun, but most people who rush to 50 and spam dark poeta hate it
if you're doing it for pvp it's pretty enjoyable. break up the grinding spurts with rifting, and actually have some fun on the way up instead of just boring yourself to death trying to get to 50. ducking the high levels and finding people your level to take out in enemy territory is really enjoyable for me.
the last thing this game needs is more zones, lol. why do you want more zones, so you can have some areas to never visit except for one or two quests? ffxi had 10,000 zones and only like 10% of them were used for more than one or two quests or missions. what a waste of development time and drive space. this may be because i'm on fregion (which isnt that big of a server), but most grind spots outside the abyss have 0 competition, and the abyss is really spread out so it can be hard to find people there unless you're specifically flying around to hunt them down. it doesn't need to be spread much thinner than that.
i will agree that most of the instances are shitty though. i hate steel rake and i only did fire temple twice or so. they need to be better xp for what a pain they are, or the drop rates need to be way better. in most cases you get more xp grinding, and have to endure less of a headache.
Let's be honest. Game is great at 50 if you're a ranger. It's more fun lower levels on other classes.
Great game, would definitely recommend it for the PVE/PVP mix.
It's hard to ask here because many are ex-FFXI players and they will probably be waiting for FFIV (lol).
Just so you know, most of the people who answered saying not to get it have quit, and the others are still playing.
Also, if they include 50% of what was in the latest trailer, it will be absolutely amazing.
i gave up on coming back to aion. just another WAR, broken promises and unbalanced pvp at any and all levels.
Id wait it out for the time being till mid summer. Atm im playing on my alts but its rather on the boring side considering it can be very grindy in some places not to mention low droprates blow hardcore.
I thought the premise of the game was WoW with wings, so I was disappointed to find that you can't even fly in most zones. The servers--even ones with low population--lag, causing your toon to rubberband. All abilities have random, non-sensical icon choices for some reason.
A friend of mine who only played WoW before Aion was really frustrated by it. He was saying that the games were so similar that the small things that he thought he should be able to do and couldn't were driving him crazy.
Very pretty game though.
I sort of think this is an unfair statement. WAR was not an NCsoft game, so how can you say broken promises? As for pvp, every class has it`s weaknesses imo. I`m a sorc, people complain all the time about getting 1 shot by them, but if I get caught with my shield down for 1 second I`m a goner. And on top of that, if I get focused my shield only serves as a means to be able to pop my other two shields and just hope the rest of my group gets them off me before my 12 seconds are up.
On topic, I love the actual game, my only gripe is finding templars lol. (And good ones are a rare find) I particularly enjoy rifting, but as someone else said, if you don`t like pvp then don`t play it. That`d be like playing L2 for the PvE aspect.
The game has a lot of potential. I'm sticking around even though it's like FFXI all over again the way I ended up starting. Plus I have yet to see anything really impressive from any other MMO.
Like all games it has it's problems, but it really depends on what kind of MMO you like most (Asian vs western?). If you think WoW is your style then I wouldn't really recommend it.
Both games just offer different things and different ways of progression (although in the big picture they are very similar as are all MMOs). Personally, a big problem I had with WoW was that it was too easy - and patch 3.3 did it for me (call me crazy?).
For me, Aion offers satisfaction much like FFXI did. Reaching the max level actually meant something (in the old days at least) and getting good gear was usually a difficult endeavor. I know I don't speak for the majority (read: easy-mode) but all the QQ about grinding makes me want to reach the max level just that much more.
