Army of Two: The 40th Day

I didn't see a thread and I'm not using the broke ass search function. Did anyone else pick this up? What do you think of it in comparison to the first one? I snagged it yesterday on a whim and I played it the majority of the day.

If you're on the fence about picking the game up here's a list of the good and the bad.

    The Bad
Teammate AI is pretty bad. Issuing commands is a crapshoot. Sometimes your teammate will do what you want them to do. Other times they will be laying in a pool of their own blood after they mysteriously decided to advance instead of holding their position like you wanted them to.

Secondary weapons are now limited to handguns only. In the first one you could use smaller submachine guns as a secondary weapon(MP5 for example.) There are only three choices in hangduns as well with very little customization available on them.

Sub Boss troops. You will learn to hate these guys because they force you to rely on the shakey teammate AI to beat them. So far I've come across four different guys wielding a flamethrower, shotgun, grenade launcher, and chain gun. The shotgun guys are fairly easy to deal with. You need multiple headshots to take them down. The other three are a bitch because you need to circle around behind them and shoot their backpacks to kill them. With a human partner, no problem. With the AI partner, prepare to start from a checkpoint. A lot.

The Story as of so far is kind of nonexistent. Granted I'm still only five or six hours in, but there has been remarkably little story in that time. I still have absolutely no idea why things are occurring and the main antagonist has yet to even be introduced.

    The Good
Hostages. You come across multiple hostages during the game. You can either save them or ignore them entirely or kill them. Saving them grants you bonuses to your reputation and will sometimes give you nonpurchaseable weapon parts for specific guns.

Morality choices are now involved in the game. Depending on what you choose(whether a security guard lives or dies) will impact what happens in the game. They show what happened to the person involved in a comic book style cutscene. So basically you find out almost immediately whether or not you should have saved the guy or let him go. There's no real benefit to doing this, but it just adds a little more depth to the game as well as some minor changes. For example the security guard won't allow you to take the weapons in a weapons locker. If you kill him you take the weapons and move on. If you put them back you see the enemy give the guard a duffel bag of cash and they then take the weapons to use against you.

Weapon customization. If you're a parts and pieces type of guy, you'll love this. Every single gun has multiple upgrades from the barrel, stock, magazine, scope, fixtures, and paint. Don't have enough money for a silencer? You can use a sode can. No money for a bayonet? Slap a screwdriver on that bad boy. It's entirely possible to slap an AK-47 barrel onto an MP5 with a drum magazine, soda can silencer, and a kitchen knife bayonet. It's pretty damn funny how far you can take the Frankenstein combinations.

The action in the game is nonstop. The gunfights are fairly intense when you're as outnumbered as you usually are. Enemy NPC's make good use of cover and sometimes you don't even see them until you're getting shot in the back. Melee attacks spice things up a bit with their brutality.

Overall I would give it a 7.5 - 8 just based on playing it yesterday. If the story never really materializes that number is going to drop. If anyone picks this up and wants to play co-op for 360 let me know. Tag is Badumshaloooop.

I was really disappointed. I had a friend over this past weekend and we played through the whole thing. (I rented it)

First of all. The split screen. It splits the screen vertically instead of horizontally. WHY! It makes it extremely difficult to see guys when you have such a restricted view. You basically have to hit a button to re-orient your view to the left or right of your character. Also, it suffers from the same problem gears of war had with cover and running... you can be in the middle of a firefight, you run towards cover, and instead of sliding behind it, you jump over it and right into a spray of bullets.

The hostage situations were fun, and a nice diversion from "killing everything that moves" mode. You get rewarded for non-lethally taking them down and getting into weapon caches. However, they inexplicably stopped doing this for the second half of the game and it goes back to destroying everything that moves.

They removed overdrive from the aggro meter. Why!

The game length.. on normal mode, we completed the entire game in a bit under 5 hours. Way too short.

The morality choices are poorly done. As far as I can tell, there's zero advantage to picking negative morality choices.

Also, the entire game takes place in Shanhai and there isn't much variety except for when you go through a zoo. Basically, it feels like you're playing through one very long level. The first game felt a lot more segmented and varied since you moved around so much.

All in all, I was disappointed and feel the first game was better. I give it a 5/10 just because it can still be fun if you play with a buddy. I'd never touch this game alone.

First entry about the Capitals championship rings is about the Penguins getting theirs. That has to hurt

I checked this out online last week and I was disappointed, the game was really short again and it controlled terribly.

First game handled like shit and was short as hell. Me and a friend played through it all in like 3-4hrs in one sitting. The splitscreen is fucking stupid and headache inducing. Played the demo for this one when it first game out, not even 1/2 way through the demo I knew it somehow was even WORSE then the first one.

I also enjoyed saving up my cash in the first game to buy the gatling gun, only to find out it has 0 acc, literally couldnt hit a building with it at pointblank range, and when you beat the game they gave you all the wpns anyways.

Loved the first but this is a pass? That's a downer because I was hoping it would be just a little bit better than the first.

The main campaign is about 5-6 hours long, there are theree endings, so it has some replay ability, online co-op, and decent online modes. But I just dont think its worth 60, 30 bucks at the most.

I wouldn't recommend this game for anything other than a rent. Its slightly improved from the first one, but nowhere near worth $60. Every stage is the same old buildings falling apart from explosions or overtaken by mercs. The story is even worse than the first one, and they changed the voice actors because they wanted it to be more serious.

Overall, if you liked the co-op stuff from the first one, you'll prolly like this one. In my opinion, morality is pointless, the hostages are a pain in the ass to save sometimes, and the customization system isn't great. The first one had more varied levels, better guns/upgrades, and the story was better because it was way over the top. Not to mention playing on the hardest difficulty isn't even a challenge. I can't comment on the multiplayer because every time I tried to play it, my game froze up.

Fuck, not even going to bother to rent then. The only part of the first game I liked was the back and forth between the 2 guys and how funny some parts were.

They tried to recreate it, but it's just not the same with the new voice actors. Like I can't even comprehend why they thought that was a good idea. I thought the point of being an actor is because you can pretend to be many things well, so why not have the original voice actors be more serious, but keep the silly banter as well?

Also the morality choice are pointless aside from collecting different weapons. It just seems like a rip off of inFamous. And the replay value for the different ending is not much at all. You can be good or bad through the whole game, and the endings are the same. The only thing I saw that was effected by your choices was small dialogue changes.

Rent at most, unless you have a dedicated partner and enjoyed the online from the first one.

Oh, they did add "extraction" mode, which is similar to Horde from Gears 2, except you move through different stages in the levels. I didn't play it much, but I don't think they're exact levels from the campaign, but I could be wrong.

I have played the first one @ friends house that he bought used for like 15$. It was pretty meh. most entertaining part was when we played "tag" if I remember you could either "high-five" your teammate when near them or hit them in the head. we'd go thru levels, chasing and hitting one another other while fighting and dodging enemies. XD

Hopefully not too much of a necrobump, but a friend and I played AoT and AoT:TFD back to back over two weeks and...man, the second game was sooo much better.

AoT had potential, but it had so many problems. Most of which the second one fixed or made better.

Morality choices and the endings may have been somewhat pointless overall, but gave us a reason to play through the game again (while collecting the rest of the stuff we missed).

Contractor mode was way harder than contractor in the first game -_-

The guns actually made different sounds in this game.

I dunno. I found the game to be challenging and a lot of fun, especially since it was designed around co-op I thought a lot of the sequences worked really well.

I am plenty happy with my purchase of the second game, and the first game was decent enough for $20.

edit: I can see what you mean about it being "too easy" if you were playing on normal difficulty it isn't hard at all.
