I was rolling around the beta forum and I saw some thread about people being able to keep their character names from the beta. How would that even be possible unless all the beta users stayed on the same server?

Yup, S-E said they're planning to allow beta testers to keep their name. I guess it would be some kind of reservation before the game starts - you pick the server or something.

They could just require all beta names to be unique (and we'll likely all be on the same server, at least per region, anyway), then wherever you go after that you'll just keep the name. Shouldn't be any conflicts.
Doesn't seem that difficult.

This is nothing different than several MMOs in the past that have allowed players who preorder or beta test to have priority on their name come launch.
There will probably be a way for you to create your character a few days in advance of the actual launch, but not be able to log in until launch.
