Lots and lots of Israel related news has been coming up lately, particularly about how the Israeli government "accidently" happened to announce new settlements when Biden went to Israel for peace talks, and when Netanyahu goes to the US to have talks with Obama.

Israeli government blindsides Biden:

WASHINGTON - Israel blindsided Vice President Joe Biden's fence-mending mission Tuesday by announcing a settler building boom in East Jerusalem.

The move to expand an Orthodox Jewish settlement by 1,600 units embarrassed Biden, who was trying to jump-start "indirect" talks with the Palestinians.

Biden showed his anger by arriving 90 minutes late for dinner at the residence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israeli government approves more settlements as its prime minister meets Obama:

JERUSALEM — The Jerusalem municipality has approved 20 new apartments for Jews in east Jerusalem, the city said Wednesday, in a move that could stir a new diplomatic crisis with the United States.

News of the approval came as Israel's prime minister was in Washington to try to calm a growing rift with the Obama administration over such construction plans.

The U.S. views Israeli building in east Jerusalem, the part of the city claimed by Palestinians as their future capital, as disruptive to Mideast peacemaking efforts. Israel insists that Jerusalem cannot be divided and reserves the right to build anywhere.

The new project is funded by American millionaire Irving Moskowitz. It calls for tearing down part of an old hotel, the Shepherd, and building 20 apartments and a three-level underground parking lot instead.

UK expells Mossad agent over robbing of identities of UK citizens:

David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, said an investigation by the Serious Organised Crime Authority had concluded that there were “compelling reasons” to believe responsibility for the “misuse” of a dozen passports lay with the Israelis.

The passports were forged while their holders were passing through airports in the region, and the counterfeit documents used by a hit squad suspected of murdering a Hamas commander in Dubai.

In a statement to MPs, Mr Miliband said that he had asked the Israeli Embassy to send home a “senior diplomat,” widely believed to be a Mossad operative connected to the plot.

I am wondering what exactly the Israeli government is intending, considering that its actions are putting its diplomatic relations in danger.

The expulsion was welcomed by Hamas officials in the Palestinian territories, but criticised by Israel, with some legislators accusing Britain of anti-Semitism.

Most shocking of all is what American military leaders and Biden himself have said:

...But no one was more outraged than Biden who, according to the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth, engaged in a private, and angry, exchange with the Israeli Prime Minister. Not surprisingly, what Biden told Netanyahu reflected the importance the administration attached to Petraeus's Mullen briefing: "This is starting to get dangerous for us," Biden reportedly told Netanyahu. "What you're doing here undermines the security of our troops who are fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. That endangers us and it endangers regional peace." Yedioth Ahronoth went on to report: "The vice president told his Israeli hosts that since many people in the Muslim world perceived a connection between Israel's actions and US policy, any decision about construction that undermines Palestinian rights in East Jerusalem could have an impact on the personal safety of American troops fighting against Islamic terrorism."...

I read a really interesting article in the Christmas double issue of the Economist this winter about how Putin's Russia has been making some really friendly overtures to Israel to gain back some of the Czar's properties in the Holy Land so they can keep using Orthodox symbols to give legitimacy to the Russian state.
