    To anyone that works(worked) at Gamestop

    Question. I bought an accessory today that I ended up not needing.

    Unfortunately I did open it. The return policy confuses me a bit. From what I gather, as long as it is within 7 days of purchasing it, I can return it because it is an accessory. Is this right? Even if it is a new item.

    First job was there.

    Pre-Owned: 7 days for money back, 30 days for exchange

    New: 30 days for money back on unopened products. 30 days for exchange on defective items (identical).

    Best situation is that you get a nice manager and they'll return it for you and they'll just throw it in defective

    Worst situation is that they refuse it and you can trade it in and put it towards another purchase.

    See the thing that confuses me is the wording on the reciept.

    Word for word it is: "Open new merchandise may be exchanged for the identical item within 30 days of purchase but, with the exception of opened new accessories, cannot be returned for a refund."

    So what I get out of that is... If it's an open new game, you can't return it for anything but a new same game nor a refund. But accessories can be refunded if opened. Going off the verbage on the reciept.

    I know the easy answer is "call them" which I'm in NY, so they're all closed. I tried a Cali store. They said as long as it is within 7 days even though I opened it, I can return it. I'm just hoping my local one says the same thing, even though company policy is the same. Guess I'll find out tomorrow either way!

    But yeah, idk, worked there years ago. You should be fine to return, but who knows.

    All Gamestop policies are the same.

    Reading off my last receipt I have.

    Basically for your case, you can return an opened new accessory for a refund, not games.

    You were never able to get a refund for an opened game (even when its gutted for display) unless its defective and you exchange it within 30 days.

    Confirmed it with my former store manager.

    So I called the store this morning. Girl that picked up (think she was the ASM) said I couldn't return it. So after that, I hung up and called Customer Service out in TX. I reconfirmed that you could return it (thanks ohemgee) and they guy said yes I could return it. So I went to the store and happily returned it.

    It just sucks they have to damage it out and can't resell it. There was literally nothing wrong with it and used for 20 mins. Oh well!

    yes you can return within 7 days. and yes they can still resell it. we have bag tops that offer 10% off of opened product....they might just be too lazy to use them

    My brother works there, he said you should be fine so long its not past 7 days after being purchased, after that it just becomes store credit, which he says is a retarded way of taking back games/accessories, but that is how they make money because they technically don't lose anything if you end up using that store credit on pre-owned/used accessories/games.

    Well heres the thing with New accessories being traded in. My store manager said that the profit margin for new to used is only 10%, so they typically don't really mind taking back the product as long as they reassure the customers satisfaction / buy something used / put a reserve or Game Informer sub down.

    It makes a lot of sense because if you've bought anything from there recently, you'll know that they push the customer service survey on you by highlighting that shit. (I go in almost every day since its next to my house and play FIFA)

    Its true, the proper procedure for gutted items (putting a sticker over the case opening) follows in suite with new unopened items. I don't see the point in questioning it really, Gamestop makes their entire profits off of USED items, because the turnaround rate is so much more in comparison to selling an item new. Gamestop stores are based off of GI/Reserves/Week to date net used sale totals. They encourage people to sell used products because they make a bitch load off of it ($25 trade in value for GoW3, turn and sell it for $55, thats $30 instant profit)

    So to say its bad practice for them to have gutted displays is fucking retarded.

    Well no I don't question their marketing or their use of gutted display copies, what bothers me is that if you get a display copy, you're INSTANTLY screwed out of changing your mind about the purchase. They should have some kind of reseal that they do, a sticker or something that has to be broken before you can open it up yourself again; if that gets broken, the game is considered open and THEN the defect/30day rule applies.

    They do have a seal that they're supposed to apply on gutted displays.

    For accessories, you can return new ones within 7 days even if they're opened, like what OP did.

    They used to put plastic wrap back on gutted copies of games but I think they're moving away from that. I don't understand the big deal about not getting a refund on a new game though. Don't buy it if you don't want it?
