Downloading ffxi updates without using Playonline Viewer?

Long story short, gf bought new computer and is going to install ffxi on it. We heard a rumor about something that would let you download all the ffxi updates much faster through just a plain old download. Is this true? and if so a link would be much appreciated. Or was it nothing more than just a rumor?
