    Traveling to New Orleans question

    So.

A friend of mine is considering a trip down to the NOLA...

    She is 20, unfortunately, though.

While not overly interested in drinking, she may want to enter venues that serve alcohol.

My question is, are they really particular with carding? Anywhere you might recommend where we could check the night life without having to worry about the whole BS 21 rule or they are lax checking for ID?

Unless you look obviously under 21, you won't get carded on Bourbon Street. I went to New Orleans last summer when I was still 20. I got carded once on Bourbon Street the entire 4-day stay in the city (I had my brother's ID). This was on the first night, despite going into the same bar 2 or 3 hours before. Bourbon Street seems to be very lax about carding. And hell, you can take your booze on Bourbon.

If you go to some of the bars near Tulane/LoyNo, you'll get carded entering the bar for sure. However, one of my friends from college lives down there (a year younger than me) and at the bars near Tulane you need to be 18+ to enter (not sure if this is the case for the bars on Bourbon). People just brought him and his friends alcohol who were 21+ and no one seemed to care. In fact, bar waitress went over to our table asking for our drink order and just said "I only need to make sure one of you is 21"

Bourbon Street can be insane. Also, prepare for massive humidity. I also don't recommend walking down any side streets. The city is pretty dangerous. Stick to main streets and Bourbon only. That is what I was told by NOPD when I visited.

During Mardi Gras they carded at all of the places I went to, but they were lax on the fake IDs. As stated above, stay on Bourbon. New Orleans is a shithole, and a dangerous one at that. Not to be a downer but there have to be better places to go this time of year.

The plan is around the first weekend in October (for an event around town we would both go to; part of the event might be in a bar venue, was just curious).
So from the sounds of it, she could likely get away with being underage, as long as we stick to Bourbon street? Anywhere else?

If you want culture or good scenery, the area around Tulane/LoyNo is really nice. Huge houses with porches etc... Audobon is in that neck of the woods too (if I remember right). Also, see a burlesque show or go to a strip club. No visit to NOLA is complete without doing one or both of those.

I've been going out in New Orleans since I was around 18 and I've only been carded two or three times.(I'm 21 now)

What event are you talking about? If you're into music and festival, I would hold it off until Halloween. You can attend Voodoofest, and Bourbon is ridiculous every year during that weekend.

Walking around the Quarter and the French market are two things everyone should experience at least once if they're visiting the city. There are a lot of awesome novelty shops and restaurants that you probably won't be able to find anywhere else in the states. If you guys do go to the Quarter I'll recommend Cafe Du Monde, can't beat the beignets.

The line there can get ridiculous on the weekend. Well worth it, but took a while to get food to go.
