I've tried:

Justhost
Fatcow
Goddaddy
1and1

Justhost beats Fatcow simply because they have more options. They are a few extra bucks but well worth it. Both have excellent support, either by phone or mail. I also really like Justhost's CP.

Godaddy is a convoluted mess, you'll get bombarded w/ ads all the time. However, it is cheaper than the first two.

1and1 wanted me to always have a current cc registered even if I didn't want to renew their services.

Idk what type of website you're going to host, but Justhost gives you more bang for your buck.

I've only ever used godaddy. First I inherited my old LS's site, now I run my own site. The control panels are a ridiculous mess until you get used to them. They offer everything for a cheap price including domain registration, hosting services with FTP users, databases, a ridiculous amount of emails and subdomains, a good chunk of web space, and fairly consistent uptimes.

I would recommend it for someone starting out I guess, since I learned a lot about web hosting and crap from using godaddy. Honestly once you own a website and have space to throw around, it's hard to ever give it up, but don't feel like you need to be nailed down to a single choice once you've made up your mind.

I've been a customer there for almost 5 years now, and they are without a doubt the best I've dealt with. They have numerous deals as low as $4.95/month (24 month contract) and $5.95/month (12 month) with unlimited disk space and bandwidth. The only problem I've had was when the server needed a reboot, so 20 minutes of downtime in 5 years.
