It's not like a lot of 'live' shows tape-delay shit anyways to ensure quality control. Can't be that hard to bleep out a swear or edit a scene right out during that budgeted time that has yet to actually reach TV viewers.

Well technically the US produces the most porn if I remember correctly, Japan however just has the stigma of being the most sex-obsessed country because of all the exposure it gets to the media due to how weird it is and how sexually repressed a certain portion of the population is. Porn in Japan, nudity especially, is kind of a touchy subject because of their content laws so really it's very difficult to find any good Japanese porn that isn't a drawing on a page... >.>

Personally I feel that nudity and profanity are the least of our worries, the things that truly hurt people are violence and abuse which America doesn't seem to have a problem incorporating into every show on every channel that children might be watching.

On topic, I'd say it's indicative of the North American mindset where violence is family-friendly but anything more than first base is some kind of society-crumbling evil. I amuse myself by imagining that the same arguments would apply both to lowering restrictions on showing sex and increasing restrictions on showing violence.
