In the market for a Smart phone...

So, my 3 year contract is due to be renewed, which to me is... new phone time! Yay!

I've yet to own a smart phone and would love some advice on what to pick.

I live in Canada so some of my choices are limited (I've heard, for example, the HTC Evo is an awesome choice, but I don't believe I could purchase one).

Some things I would want in a smart phone:
Touch screen. Personally think this is the way of the future so I want to get used to the interface.

Any recommendations on those who have used them?
The one the rep was trying to sell me was the Motorola Milestone (Which seemed alright, but I would love opinions from someone not trying to sell me stuff :D)

idk what's available in Canada, but I fucking love my Droid. I've never had an iPhone though and Sprint here doesn't even have 3G so I'm stuck with Verizon.

If you like the EVO the HTC Desire HD is essentially the same phone for non-Sprint (U.S.) markets, with a few slight alterations, should be released soonish.

My general opinion on manufactures HTC has the best android phones currently, both in terms of out of box experience, and ease of tinkering (rooting, custom roms etc).

About the milestone, it is based off the original Droid, though I think there was or is some issue with Moto not providing updates for it. In general it is dated hardware at this point, though I wouldn't say "obsolete" yet.

I don't know the offerings in Canada so can't really offer much other advice other then Google should be announcing something about their next update in a few weeks. The next version probably wont make much of a difference in terms of what you would buy since most phones on the current build (2.2) will probably be able to update, but there will be some that get cut off.

Windows Phone 7 and iPhone are worth looking at for comparison.

I love my iPhone despite not liking apple all too much.

Its nice to finally have a phone that does everything I want and does it well. My only complaint is ATT service gets dropped calls a bit more then verizon but I would buy it again. I got the 3GS btw.

i may have linked to a droid, thats was because it was only an R2-D2 edition, but I agree with matricide.

Even while working at a Sprint store where I could get a phone for 20/mnth unlimited, I still choose to pay ATT's ridiculous prices because I love my iPhone 4 that much!

Windows Phone 7 and iPhone are worth looking at for comparison.

Desire is actually a phone offered here. I've *heard* Evo is actually a superior phone to the iPhone in functionality (I like Apple products but I'm also willing to examine other options) as far as 4G options go. iPhone seems to be the only 4G option I have in my neck of the woods, but it's also on mega back order (fucking turn off for me).

iphone isnt 4g internet speed.. its 4(th)g(eneration) just summing that up for you. it uses ATT's 3g network, until they turn on HSPA in first or second quarter 2011


if you want to go with sprint, theres another thread in tech asking about spring android phones. Personally I like the Epic more than the Evo, faster, lighter, a little thicker to support the physical keyboard, but not as massive as the Evo, and the super amoled screen is gorgeous. Plus it just feels better all around.

Jeez, is ATT still the only official supplier of the iPhones down there? All the major cellphone providers in Canada have them a year after the 3G model hit here.

Well there is a reason people have a hardon for apple and I think more people would if they had a bit more disposable income.

My main thing after 4 years with my old phone which was rock solid and had no problems with(just wanted a change to something new and waiting for it to die could have taken years and I didn't want to wait).

For me I didn't have a camera I liked to carry around, nor an ipod and I tried those palm pilot's but it was annoying that it didnt do anything else. The iPhone is nice because it takes great pictures if your in good light, video(with the 3gs), has long battery life if your using it like an ipod and can call people all in one. I hate carrying around a bunch of stupid shit and would not use my palm pilot because of it but having a camera/ipod/phone/map/email/internet shit all in one and doing them all well is just something I wanted.

Now there are other phones that do these things but they usually fall short somewhere else. If you want to try one just go to a apple store and screw around with it. Took me 20 minutes of playing with my friends to convince me that I wanted one and have not regretted it since.

Personally, I wouldnt say I have a hard on for apple, but both my wife and I have iPhones and Macbook pros, we have an 64gb iPad that I use for work but also take on long trips for entertainment. So yea I do buy A LOT of apple products, but imo its just because they're superior.

I live on my iPhone and I get a whole day 16hrs+ use out of it. My eyes never get hurt from the screen like they did on my Evo, the battery is a beast, and the phone just feels sturdy. I honestly question how they get away for selling it for so cheap compared to comparable phones (Evo, Epic, Droid, etc..) then I remember they make a killing from the app store.

I needed to calibrate my macbook battery the other day, i was streaming a movie and music and browsing the web with my brightness all the way up just TRYING to kill my battery to <20% so I could calibrate it, that took almost my entire work day to drain it under extensive use, and that was 8hrs.

Apple just seems to make the avg product better. Unless some company comes outta the woods with a groundbreaking device then i'll be sticking with my iPhone, yes companies are getting closer to catching up to the iPhone but they're still a ways away.


And for HTC, they're phones just dont seem quality to me anymore. Back when they were expensive as fuck and in low demand they made great phones, but now trying to compete and produce high quality phones in the masses, it just doesnt seem to be going their way.

Oh, don't get me wrong; I like Apple products (I own a Macbook and have used iPods for years). You just have to cut through some of the fanboy love sometimes to get a fair opinion, though.

That goes true for android fanboys too tho.

I know a lot of friends who got an android phone because they didnt want to jump on the apple bandwagon, and that's their only justification for being an android fanboy.

Android is making a killing just because people dont want to become labeled as an apple fanboy, i personally said I would never get an iPhone because of all the hype, but I did and now I wont go back.

I also said I'd never watch Twilight cuz of the hype, and well that is one promise to myself I havent broken
