Dish Network's 14.3 million customers nationwide will have to make do without FX, National Geographic Channel and some other cable channels while the satellite service and News Corp. haggle in the latest corporate struggle over carriage fees.
News Corp.'s Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network are covered under another contract and are unaffected. The same goes for Fox Broadcasting and local Fox stations, but Dish's contract for the Fox Broadcasting is set to expire on Oct. 31. That's the same night as Game 4 of Major League Baseball's World Series coverage on the network, which should lead to many "hardball" puns if there's a similar stalemate.
Dish said that News Corp. has been seeking an "unprecedented rate increase of more than 50%" for the Fox cable channels that went dark, which include the company's 19 regional sports channels. A Fox spokesman told the Los Angeles Times that a ""gross overstatement," but would not say how much money per Dish Network customer it wanted from the carrier.
A Fox statement called its proposal "fair and in line with the tremendous value we provide" and said "Dish has asserted its subscribers do not value our channels and has made a decision to go forward without them."
Dave Shull, Dish Network's senior vice president of programming for Dish Network, said in a statement that his company's customers shouldn't "be held hostage in order to finance Fox's irresponsible acquisition of sports rights," especially in a tough economy.
The Walt Disney Co. battled earlier this year with Cablevision before the standoff ended on the day of ABC's Oscars telecast. Cablevision's Fox deal is set to expire soon, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
