Lost dog hanging around house...

So this dog has been hanging around my house for the last 36 hours, and I'm not really sure what to do with it. We got it cornered on my deck but we can't really grab it because it bites anything that comes near it, and animal control is closed on weekends. It does have a collar on (probably has a phone number) but I really don't want to get bit by a dog that's been roaming around the area for who knows how long (I live in a rural area).

Should I just like put on heavy gloves and restrain it or anyone have any ideas? It won't eat treats, nor will it drink anything. I just have it boxed in on my deck right now. I don't wanna waste an officers time by calling 911 but nothings really open on the weekend it seems...

Don't keep it boxed in your deck? By keeping it boxed into your deck you are making it your problem. Has it been destructive in any way?

Don't get bit who knows what it might have. I'd call your locale police station not 911, if it's trapped on the deck. They may at least be able to contact someone with animal control on call or something. Leave out food and water in a dish maybe it'll calm down.

It's been just wandering around my house and sleeping on my deck when it rains, and it would run away anytime I got near it. It's not doing anything destructive (its a smaller dog) but I just want it gone lol. If I kept ignoring it I don't think it'd just leave because it can get out of the rain here, although it'll starve to death eventually I suppose =/

Ended up calling 911 and they redirected to a animal control person I guess, so they'll come and take care of it I guess. Thanks guys.

Calling 911 is the correct answer.

The only other suggestion I can think of is to look online for remedies for keeping animals away..

Calling 911 directs you to the local PD via E-911. So in theory by dialing 911, it does the same thing as calling the direct line (which will 95% of the time never be answered). Most of the time 911 operators who direct EMS/Fire/Police are county or major metropolitan cities. Smaller cities and counties will just dial the local PD off the triangulation of cellphone towers, GPS, and Land lines coordinating to get you the closest thing to help you.

Depends on location mostly. For MA, any 911 call placed from a cell phone goes directly to state police dispatch no matter where you are located. So just for reference to others, it is always good to know your "direct 911 number" for example Boston, MA would be 617-343-4911.

As for calling the station directly, we usually tell people to call 911 anyways. Since we cannot actually dispatch officers from the station, besides that's the dispatchers job!

For the actual OP, calling 911 would have been fine. Usually a 1 man unit would tag along with animal control anyways "just in case".

Ah, my understanding of calling 911 has always been an emergency hotline to get ambulances or fire trucks dispatched to one's location. At least in my city it was like that - we had a local police department down the road (who never had ANYTHING to do) and a hospital not terribly far from my house. I've never called 911 though, so I don't really know.

This is how it used to be. A last ditch only to report terrorist take over must stay open line.

Now you are supposed to call 911 for everything so they dispatch. If you call the station directly you wont get an answer, even though they will be the ones responding.
