    Tuberculosis?

So I have a friend who was pretty sick and was in the hospital for about a year and a few months. He just got back last week. Now I know he was sick as fuck but aside from his diabetes, didn't rly know of anything else wrong w/ him. So since he's been back, I've been over there pretty much every day hangin out like we used to, etc. So today, I find out he was in there so long because he has tuberculosis @.@.

Are Americans vaccinated for that shit and should it be fine now since they let him go back home?

Typically not vaccinated for it unless there's a risk. If they released him, they did so under the purview of the CDC, so I'm sure he's fine.

Alright, thanks. Main concern was it being an airborne thing and I've been eating over there every day this week (His mom is excellent at Vietnamese cuisine).

I guess you could go get a BCG vaccine if you want, but the CDC wouldn't have let him be released if he was a risk. TB patients go under strict quarantine.

There are vaccinations available, but they aren't required like MMR/Hepatitis B/Etc. so the majority of Americans are not vaccinated. It should be fine to hang out with your friend; you can always get a TB skin test to see if you have come in contact with it. The skin test only confirms exposure, a chest x-ray would confirm an infection.

It's like 8 months or so of meds and after the first 30 days you aren't contagious anymore really. They quarantine people longer than that just to be safe. We have an elephant with TB right now that we're treating. I actually got it from southeast asia...meds suck, it's like going through chemo. If he's home, you can rest assured that he's fine. The government is hardcore about TB because it spreads so easily.

Sounds even worse than getting bubonic plague - which a friend of mine did - easily killable with antibiotics nowadays, but still very high on the WTF meter.

It's alright, couldn't you just steal the cure from someone else that earned it or from someone else that pays for healthcare?

    Karma, you now have TB

Isn't the TB vaccine the one they give you that raises a little bump on your forearm? or wherever they put the medicine in? I remember getting those shots when I was little, haven't gotten it in a long time but I don't think it needs to be updated more than every 10 years? or so?

If your friend was hospitalized for tuberculosis you're fine. They wouldn't have released him if he was contagious.

We had a TB scare at my work. They had to test about 200 people, because one of my employees came back from Laos with it. He came back with a little cough, and nobody really thought anything about it. Then he got worse, and was in the hospital for over a month. I was kinda freaked out cause he was in my office alot, and we played basketball after work like twice a week. After they tested everyone, 7 more people had it, and shit hit the fan hard. I had different agencies and HR people calling and asking questions non-stop. Those 7 people ended up suing my work too. LOL

Some dude exposed 2500 people on campus last year. Shit was whack, had to go get tested by the state to continue taking classes. Thankfully only a couple people caught it, and I was not one of them.

Isn't that were most people in post-industrial nations get TB these days, from visiting developing nations?
