Failed HD recovery

I'm helping a friend out with a failed HD. There is important data on the HD that I need to recover. I have tried running a chkdsk but it was aborted. Trying to run a chkdsk /f now. Does anyone know a good data recovery that I could use that is free? She will pay for it if needed but if there is something free I would like to use that. The only file I really need is a quicken file for 2010. Anything else would be bonus. There is two programs in the free apps and utilities link but one is not free and the other is not in english.


If I tried to access the drive through linux based OS would that work?

when you say failed, do you mean it's physically failed, or just windows won't boot anymore. if it's the second, then booting off a linux cd (like ubuntu) should work fine to mount the drive and grab what you want off of it.

I should have been more specific. This drive was intended to be her backup drive but she just saved her records to this drive. The problem right now is the master file table is corrupted and chkdsk is unable to recover it.

Don't quote me on that, but quick formating and accessing it with any recovery software should be fine since quick format doesn't erase anything. Just don't write on it after you format it.

Might be a way to access it from Linux without touching it at all but haven't done that in a decade.

Runnning a "Super Scan" from the Active@ File Recovery demo atm to see if it picks up anything. This will at least make me feel better if I can see the files from a software.


The original problem was "I updated Quicken the other day and now I can't find my 2009 and 2010 records". When I took a look at her system I didn't really know what I was getting into since I was not very familiar with Quicken. When I tried to scan her F: drive for quicken files I started getting the HD drive error and was unable to access to her F drive. I'm assuming that the timing of the failed drive just happen to be around when she updated the Quicken causing her to think that was what was wrong. If I find the files I don't mind paying for the software to bring them back.

I've had a lot of request for bringing back deleted files / photos other hard drive issues so I could easily make the money back from buying a good software.

Thanks for the help. Found what I was looking for. I'm going to use power data recovery to bring them back then reformat etc.
