    Wedding Presents

Going to my Cousins wedding a in a month or two, and my brother and I are expected to put together a decent wedding present.

My cousin and her soon to be husband are both early thirties, have a young son, 4-5 years old, and have their own house, so they're trying to avoid the usual wedding gifts as they generally have everything. My parents have specifically requested something outside the norm from us.

Any ideas, no matter how off the wall are accepted.

It seems like more and more established (ie. have been living together) couples getting hitched are ditching the usual "housewares" type gifts for cash towards their honeymoons or other special projects. I've known couples who asked for cash towards: art, kayaks, travelling funds, and matching tattoos. Inquire if they have something in mind they might want people putting in money towards. You can always get them a small personal gift in addition to the cash donation if that's your thing too.

Well, his mom isn't getting married...his cousin is. I'd have hated my mom to pick my wedding gifts.

If you want to do something neat and something they'd love, find out who their photographer is and look at the stuff he offers. Coffee table book, canvas print, they'll have options. Whatever is left out of the budget...cash.

Depending on the money situation, I'd deck out their house with something relevant to their interests; like a theater room or something.

If not, maybe a long cruise for them? Or a box.

^ you need to add appropriate tax onto it depending on where in the USA you live.

I'd be nine kinds of pissed off if someone spent $500 on a beach towel for me. So much more awesome shit could be bought.

Cash Rules Everything Around Me. Dolla Dolla bill ya'll.

Unless they have a gift registry, money is the way to go. Even if they do, i still think money is the best gift. The question is how much. $50-100 is a fair amount, more if you're a close friend/family member.

When giving money, what's an acceptable amount? I plan to give my best friend for his wedding no less than 100 bucks, just wondering what most people give.

Instead of just giving them money why not open an account with Wu-Tang Financial as well.

I'd say between 1-200 unless your rich as fuck or living in a cardboard box, then adjust accordingly. My understanding is that for non family related guests gifts should be about that price range, so cash equiviliant should suffice.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

everyone gives cash nowadays it seems, I think at our wedding (of 80~ people) we got about a total of 5 actual gifts and the rest cash. Which actually was awesome because it paid for our cruise and more.

However, if you are against gifts did you actually check out their wedding registry at all? That should give you a good idea of things they might actually want and then maybe you can get something from there.

gifts of activites can be great. if they live in a city, I'm sure you can find all sorts of things. I've gotten things like cupcake making classes http://www.butterlane.com/classes.html or trapeze lessons http://newyork.trapezeschool.com/ as gifts before. if the couple are active, things like that can be awesome.

without stating a budget, you're going to get lots of answers that don't make sense for you. what's your min/max?

I've always thought of wedding gifts as things you give to help them start their home, but most people have been living together for years before they get married, so it's less of a viable option.
