    Thaumaturge

Mod Edit: Updated 8/29/10, credit for the 30+ abilities goes to Gulkeeva.

    Death is Only the Beginning

In the hands of a skilled practitioner, thaumaturgy can be a force of terrifying destruction. At the heart of this school of magic lies the ability to call forth and command the latent aether within oneself through deep introspection.
To then mold that aether into sorcery, the thaumaturge makes use of a scepter or staff, within which is housed a medium—a natural stone imbued with magical properties. The guild is centered at the Arrzaneth Ossuary in Ul’dah, within whose hallowed halls are said to reside powers of life, death, and the beyond.

Anyone have any insight into how viable of a healer a THAU can be? I know at this point probably anything with the cure spell can be a healer. I'm just having trouble deciding if I want to be a conj or thau. Def looking to be a healer though.

    TIA

How many people have tried this out thus far? In all honesty, I thought the job looked like shit for quite some time. I'm not really a mage type person but Conj had seemed to have a mix of everything needed.

Now looking at those skill links though, the job looks orgasmic. Like I've said, I've never played mage jobs past what was needed but I may just pick this up. Hell Punishing Barb looks good enough for soloing. Is that anything that can be subbed for another job with good potency?

Punishing Barb is OP atm. The damage done back to enemy is 100% of what you were hit for, even if you use it on another class D:

Yeah I'm with you Null. I was planning on playing conj because everyone was saying that was the healing class. But after seeing the skill list I think thau looks more like my style (RDMish). Looks like it has a lot more soloing potential than conj too (even if barbs will be tuned down).

So I got in beta this weekend and got to try it out. Started up a Thau first thing. Havent gotten very far, only level 6 atm iirc, but I'm liking it so far.

Sacrifice is nice. It doesnt use much of your HP and heals for quite a bit, especially after the "regen" effect. I think I'll definitely need to pick up the conj cure to go with it for a larger spammable heal.

I'll probably try to get to 10 or so tonight to try out some more abilities. I'm really interested in the TP mana regen ability (forget the name), to see what kind of MP return it gives.

Punishing Barbs returns 100% of the dmg done to you ATM, so it is really good. Sacrifice is good because it heals for a decent amount and it leaves a regen, the problem is that it costs HP, not so ideal on a OH SHIT situation where the mob pwnd you and left you with 20 HP. Another useful ability is Slow, it greatly increases the delay of the mobs attacks. In regards to dps, My lvl 10 conj does more dmg than my lvl 12 Thaum, might only be for me tho. The conjurer has more defensive skills such as protect, shell, and stoneskin.

At 15 I basically use Punishing Barbs til it runs out then try to slow each mob at the start of the fight when it's down, though many times you kill too quickly for the Slow timer to keep up.

At 13-14 doing DC Hatchlings/Aurelias I was fighting with no downtime minus the occasional Binding Tendril hitting me at the end of jellyfish fights, and when I got streaky with good luck on Damnation landing I was actually profiting MP while fighting, just doing Dart > Dart > Damnation > repeat and tossing in a Scourge to finish off mobs that were at 25% to avoid eating Backflip.

I haven't done much with Conj, but once you get Thaum past 10 it really cruises, hopefully it remains relatively equally strong for open beta/retail.

This is the most complete skill listing I have from phases 2 + 3.

They are all incomplete in some way, so if you see anything wrong or have info I don't, let me know and I'll correct them.

Skills & Traits you buy with Marks:

    Spoiler: show

    A note on the skills/traits:
The skills that increase an Attribute temporarily on the gathering classes cannot be used on the combat classes.
So far, each combat class has 2 skills, a level 20 one and a level 40 one. The skills cost zero TP, zero MP and cost no Action Points to equip.
The skills that say "Increase TP generation" do less damage than a normal attack but give 150-200% more TP.
The traits that grant class affinity are designed to increase the effectiveness of your cross class skills. Equipping the CON affinity trait on another class will boost the effectiveness of the Cure spells for example.
The Attribute swap traits can be used to reduce the diminishing returns penalty when buying your stats.

    For example:

You buy the +10 STR to +10 INT trait.

Your STR is 40, your INT is 15.

If you put 10 allocation points into STR your STR will now be 45 (it costs two points to raise a STAT beyond 40).

However, if you put 10 points into INT, and equipped the trait, your STR will be 50, and your INT still 15.

You get 5 more points of STR for the same allocation point cost, and have the advantage of already having some INT should you swap to a mage class.

Don't think I've really seen any talk about it elsewhere...but if anyone was wondering or hadn't tried it, Thaum can equip shields in their offhand and access Guard and other things like Phalanx. I didn't get my shield high enough to unlock Shield Bash so I can't speak as to whether or not it's full strength or nerfed a bit compared to Gadiator's, but being able to use Guard was pretty nice. Unfortunately I figured this out right at the end of the night Wednesday so I didn't get to use it more than one fight, but figured I'd put it out there.

Also when OB starts I'll work on editing the OPs in this sections with the abilities/levels.

Well that list is beta 3, it "could" change in open beta (probably not by much considering it didn't change at all from 2->3) except the damage modifiers (which some are just obscene amounts of it.. I'm talking stuff that could hit several thousands!)

Updated again with the OB stuff, changes are pretty minor. Bind costs slightly more MP, Paralyze/Silence cost slightly less. Largest change seems to be the Punishing Barbs timer being increased from 2 minutes to 3 minutes, guess they realized it was a tad broken. Numbing Rime now costs 1k TP instead of 1.5k TP.

It was really painful playing through with this class so far... only rank 3 but I seem to get raped so easily by anything and do poor damage compared to conjurer, and I also randomly die, I get alot of "you killed you" when I die which I don't get how I'm killing myself. Tips?

    Also, are all spells AOE?

I think they're conal AoE. You can turn it off with /aoe on or /aoe off, or press z. And yes, Thaum at low levels is gaaay. But once you get sacrifice everything gets better. Then you get Slow, which is fucking sick, and Damnation which helps with the MP and Punishing Barbs, which rapes face still. I imagine that a lot of Thaum skills will help Conjurer and vice versa. I'm close to rank 12, I wanna see if Dia and Bio can make this job even more broken.

I'll keep at it then, I switched to conjurer but also noting they have like no way of stopping mobs. I mean if you're a mage figure you would get some kind of CC to give yourself some breathing room, I only played marauder before and it's so easy compared to either of the mage classes.

How should stats be distributed for this job? I've pretty muched dumped everything into INT so far.

PIE for magic accuracy (stop resists), MND for better cures and MP (mdef is nice as well), then a little bit of VIT for HP, and some DEX for acc (damnation needs it).

So I spent like 20 points on INT for nothing? lol... how do you respec your points?

For the spells, if I do /aoe off will I still get that cursor that asks you to select the target? It's really annoying how the UI handles casting, after pressing the spell you have to take your hand off the mouse and press enter to make it go, I hate that.
