Employer's mandatory gift exchange?

My girlfriend works at the casino. The shift she is on, everyone hates each other. It's like a big highschool fest in there or something.

Here's where it gets even tarder.

To solve the drama issue, her supervisors are calling a mandatory meeting to discuss the problems that are going with the employees of her shift. She is friends with one of the supervisors there and she was told that the at the meeting they were going to do a mandatory secret santa.

First thing my girlfriend asked was: "Are we going to be supplied the money for this?" and she was told it would have to be taken out of their own pockets.

Is this legal? There's absolutely noway she's going to buy any of her coworkers a gift for the holidays.

It may very well not be legal; my guess is it's probably not. But the amount of trouble and drama she's going to stir up by telling management to fuck off on this issue is probably going to be a lot bigger pain in the ass for her than spending $10 on a crappy gift is.

Also, it doesn't sound like she knows the exact terms of the deal yet, she's hearing it second hand. Things change; it might not work out as described.

This. I personally don't get it. She gets along well with everyone and makes by far the MOST in tips at the end of the night well above everyone else. People just have a problem with her for childish reasons. They're just rude to her etc. The older ladies in her department are really nice to her where the people her age are just plain bitches.

Those of you who are saying the problem is my gf, she works with 4 AFRICAN AMERICAN teenagers(18-20) who are obese or daddy's little princess. Nough said.

I personally think it's bullshit for any employer to say it's mandatory to give a gift to your coworkers at a part-time job.
