What's a free DVD->AVI/MP4 software? (Can't find any in BG search)

Got loads of results for DVD burning software, but not ripping!

I don't trust Google, gave me way too many software results which requires purchasing.

Basically I've been given some DVDs with about 20 episodes of a specific DVD by my family, but they want it back. So instead of power watching them, I wanted to rip them to AVI/Mp4 to watch in my own time.

I am unable to copy these DVDs (but they play fine) because the ISO making app I got gets a read error 20% in, which I guess is because of bad media.

I presume I'll hit read errors when ripping to AVI/Mp4, but it don't matter, would rather get most of the stuff than none!

http://handbrake.fr/ is fairly good, and free. The one potential hangup is that it does not handle decrypting DVDs, which is to say, disabling copy protection. If you can successfully do that, then it's fairly simple to make it into an MP4 or MKV with Handbrake. Since I'm not if linking to utilities made for doing that is counter to what BG wants, I'll just say if you Google "decrypt DVD", you'll get some working tools/tutorials as the top results.

Ya I got decrypting utitlies, but the problem here is that the DVD's poor quality (maybe because it's from china) makes it impossible for it to be replicated.

So with a tool to extract stuff to MP4, I can bypass that necessity and grab whatever I can off it.

Thanks Isiolia, I'll try it out!!

the DVDs are not encrypted for sure, the ones I am going for. It's from china hehehehe.

Seanr: Nah it's not possible to. Besides these are in Cantonese, making them extra rare.

DVDFab is pretty idiot proof and straight forward.

DVD Decrypter is the program I've always used, only had 1 DVD that didn't work with it, Lyrical Nanoha ^^; If I wanted to make DVD copies, I'd then use Nero usually.

    I rarely have need for it, and got a full version for free when buying a DVD burner, not sure why it's so bad ^^;

I use DVD Decrypter too, yup (which ironically Isiolia didn't want to post a link to and you just did lol)

So I tried handbrake. It seemed to work brilliantly.

However, the quality of my DVDs are too poor. They play fine, yup, but read errors everywhere when I try to rip even a minor chapter/segment.

So I've given up on this now

I'll just watch the DVDs quick and return it to my sister lol

DVD Decrypter and HandBrake are all I've ever needed, at least until 2010 when new DVDs started having a different encrytion method (and thus won't play on Win XP systems either). I tried to rip RIN Daughters of Mnemosyne and at 30% through the disc it had used 250 GB of drive space, with the table of contents file saying the disc was of infinite size.

    Fuck DVDFab's pricing model.

DVD Decrypter still kind of works but it's ancient and doesn't work on 64 bit operating systems.

My OS is 64-bit and DVD Decrypter has been working for me ever since I built it 13 months ago. It does rarely crash when you load a disc at the wrong time, but it's still very stable once you learn that quirk. The only reason how old it is matters is because they finally changed the CSS encryption method a couple years ago, after sticking with it for almost a decade after it was cracked. It works perfectly with any traditionally encrypted DVD.
