Is this common with most science level college courses or just complete bullshit?

Have to ask this. I need to take a science core for my degree program, I decided to take Geology and they offer it online. Well turns out if I want to take it, the class requires at $100 lab book and for me to buy a $100 box...of rocks. I'm not kidding either, the box just contains common rocks like limestone, quartz, shale, all the shit you'd expect in Geology. I've already taken a Geology course, but it was a 3credit course not a 4 credit, so this college will not accept the transfer because it REQUIRES a lab they say.

I emailed the cashiers office and asked if this was just something to offset the cost of online courses compared to on campus, as I was sure there was a cost difference...but it turns out there is no difference in cost at all between on campus and online courses the college offers. Better yet, even if you take this course online, you STILL have to buy the box of rocks because the college won't even supply you with these items in the lab.

Has anyone else run into this? I asked the cashiers to give me the email of a Dean of faculty I can speak with because I think this is pretty fucking absurd. I'm on a tight budget, and dropping $100 on a box of rocks that I am 100% sure they won't buy back from me is pretty goddamn outrageous.

I paid lab/materials feels all the time for college-level science classes. Part of university learning.

Why is a science course offered online, along with it including a Lab, that sounds retarded. Take a different class or go to a different school.

Only thing I've ever had to buy for class was goggles and lab coat.

Because the only times my actual computer systems courses are offered interfere with EVERY other class the college offers for this shit. Hell some of them even interfere with each other. My linux course and Win7 courses are the same times and days and only offered 1 day of the week.

And yeah, i've never had to buy the materials for a science lab. The books and shit sure, but never had to buy rocks. That's like bringing your own chemicals for a chem course.

All of my science classes everything has been provided.

Even in microbiology, they provided a lab coat (which my teacher let me have for keeps at the end). I'm in Cell Biology now, which requires your own lab coat, which I have from the previous class.

I took this same exact class online. I had to pay for the box and for the books, it's kind of dumb but it's a easy way to get your sciences out of the way.

Just take a real science class. Like chem, bio, anatomy, etc.

It helps me think of you as my hero if anything.

Only issue about taking something different is that this was all there was left a month ago when I registered, now there isnt jack shit. Oh well. I might end up just taking a speech class since I need that and get into some bullshit science course next semester. I know there's a chem professor who hates textbooks and online homework things. Public speech class has a 200$ book for it lol, fuck that shit, it's public speaking. What is a textbook going to teach me the teacher cant, unless they are horrible at public speaking.

My shitty Geology community college class made me buy all my own supplies.

We had to do "labs" on our own time as homework and it was something like a $186 packet that included the textbook and the supplies, which had the same type of thing with a box of rocks and some generic viewing equipment.

This is extremely common and happens all the time at regular universities. Even some classes where there is no "lab" like a programming class or a math class will still charge a lab fee because they have open computer labs available for you to use if you want. I think almost every class I have taken has had some sort of extra fee or extra materials you had to buy for it. Get over it or take a different class. Also $100 for a text book brand new is pretty standard middle of the road. I have seen books as much as $150 in classes before. If you don't want to pay that much get a used version off Amazon, Ebay or a local used book store. Last semester the book for my Probability and Stats class was $185 brand new on Amazon, I got a used copy for $40 and when it came in the mail it was in new condition and looked barely used at all.

For some reason I wanna recall there being a lab fee installed into my tuition, but other than that I don't remember paying for anything other than books. And I almost never bought them anyways.

37k/yr for tuition+room&board (inc. meal plan).

    $160/semester in lab fees.

Oh yeah, the textbook wasn't that big of a deal to me. The only thing that annoyed me was not being able to download a .pdf online like I have for all the other courses (fuck you college, not paying $400). The box of rocks is what made me go "wtf"

if you live near a university they might have the box of rocks behind the desk. not sure how the loan works for that and if you have to prove you are in a class there or not
