Need help running FFXIV using Wine
Hi there. I have been playing FFXIV just fine up until last year June after an update caused my game to crash, preventing me from uninstalling FFXIV and forcing to have to re-install Windows 7, whereby I get an APPCRASH/ffxivboot.exe error. Prior to this, i have played the game for several months without any issues. i gave up after a long time but I wanted to play again. I decided to purchase a new FFXIV disk, however, found that that disk ceased to work, giving me the same APPCRASH/ffxivboot.exe error. I can run games such as Battlefield 3 on High/Ultra settings no problem so I don't see why this game won't work.
Currently, I have been trying to set up Wine so I can play FFXIV. However, I am stuck right now and need help. I got up to step 7 using the information provided at WineHQ (sorry it won't let me post the URL) Internet Explorer 8 works just fine, but for some reason I am having trouble figuring out how to set up FFXIV from here. I am 1 or 2 steps away from being able to play. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I was from the Lindblum server.

"an update caused my game to crash, preventing me from uninstalling FFXIV and forcing to have to re-install Windows 7" sounds very suspicious. An update to what? Windows? Drivers? The game?
Onto the appcrash: Did you try changing your gfx drivers? Ati or nvidia? Maybe it's having a problem with xfire/sli so try with it disabled if you have that? Ensure directx9 is fully installed (since you reinstalled win7)? Try a compatibility mode or other game settings? Disable aero; try a basic theme? You never listed what all you tried to combat the problem, so you may have already tried these things and we don't know.
Onto wine: is this the url? http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...sion&iId=21478 Since you have a low post count, you can't post full urls but you can post partial ones with a space. Reading those steps on this site for getting it to work on osx, step7, it seems you need to navigate to where the ffxivboot.exe is and run it from the terminal with "wine ffxivboot.exe" (or at least I assume this, I do not have osx to try this). It mentions that this can also not work the first couple times, in step6 anyway, and also ensure you're using v1.3.36 of wine as mentioned at the top of the page (it's not the newest version). On a side note, pretty cool it's on silver/gold status, never knew that, but the manner in which to get it working is still a bit convoluted. That page has instructions for other OSs besides osx, like arch linux (link: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...estingId=65385 , big wall of text at the top)
Just bouncing ideas. I've never had ffxiv installed nor delved into wine outside of maybe a decade ago lol. Maybe someone else has better ideas once there's more info on what's been tried.

It was an update to the game. Something weird happened where the game was updating but suddenly crashed and gave me some kind of error message (I can't remember the message). Anywho, ever since last June, I have not been able to play the game. I have ATI Radeon HD 5770 by the way.
I have tried uninstalling the game and re-installing it as well as Windows 7 Ultimate. Like I said, this is the only game I have been having problems with and it did work before. I have tried virtually everything and read a whole bunch of posts from different people having a similar problem to no avail. I even contacted SE but they were no help like usual.
And yes, that is the correct url.

So...I have been trying for a day now. I am still on step 7; and I keep getting this message after inputting this ---> /Users/annabellerose/Desktop/SquareEnix/FINAL FANTASY XIV/ffxivboot.exe: cannot execute binary file. I can't even get to the wine ffxivboot.exe
. I feel as though it's an easy fix. However, for some reason I am still having difficulties. Is there anyone familiar with Wine that can help me alleviate this problem?
I have installed the game, I just can't get it to open >.<

It's not saying to execute your ffxivboot file alone in step7, it's saying to travel to its folder and then open it with wine. The person's instructions are just trying to show where his was, not that he attempted to run it then without wine first, unless I'm misinterpreting what you're doing as your step7 or I'm looking at the wrong one.
In other words, the first part of step7 should be (assuming it's from the post by "Evan Burns"): navigate to ffxivboot's folder in terminal and then type in "wine ffxivboot.exe". He's never opening it without wine, and is opening/closing terminal a lot.

Yeah - I might be a little mislead. I am, however, trying an alternate method that was posted on Bluegartr. If I can't get XIV to run, I might go back to XI. I had around 13 level 75 jobs back in the day. The hassle of starting over seems overwhelming and discouraging

lol for some reason I can't post the rest :/ Anyway, that's most of the information from the error I received.
