Losing connections in FFXI, but not the internet

My friend keeps disconnecting from Final Fantasy every 5-20mins... He's still able to use the internet like Firefox etc. Anyone know how to remedy this problem?

Dumb question is it anytime in FFXI or only when he's not doing anything?

Because there is a section inside the game where at default is a 20min idle log off So if don't touch anything for 20minutes it will log you off

Open the following ports on your router to work with FFXI/PlayOnline:

    Using a Router

Be advised that following information is subject to change depending on PC configuration and the version of driver software used. Please use this list only for reference.

+ Port numbers that may be used by the PlayOnline server group:
    -TCP 25, 80, 110, 443 or 50000 - 65535
    -UDP 50000 - 65535

    * You may need to set up a web browser for your PC. For more information, please refer to the appropriate vendor's instruction manual.

    * Your router may require that you use a PC to configure your network settings. For more information about how to configure your network settings, please refer to the instruction manual that came with your router or contact the manufacturer directly.

    * If your Internet Service Provider (ISP) specifies a DNS server, you may need to configure your settings to allow packets to pass through UDP Port 53 as well.

For more information, please refer to the instruction manual for your router or the information provided by your ISP.
If your friend is unfamiliar with port forwarding; follow this guide.

Do the port forwarding above and you will not have a single problem with it ever again. I was having the same problem recently and ran into a guide which fixed it right up...

Sorry for the necro, but this one has been my guide in the past.

Recently my net went out and I ended up resetting the modem. I started having the same issue again (DCing after about 3-5 mins of being logged in yet internet works fine). Router settings (as listed above) were still there but I ended up having to set the modem back to static IP since that got reset to default.

I eventually got it to work, but then I logged off and tried it again the next day and it was back to square one. No settings were changed from when it was working but I'm still getting disconnected again. This has been happening regularly the past week or so. Most recent was last night: I kept trying various things (rebooting router and modem and flushing the DNS) and finally got it to stay connected. I eventually logged off to sleep. Wake up ~8 hours later and try to connect and I'm losing connection again despite nothing changing since the last time I logged on.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cliff Notes:
    -Static IP is set up.
-Port Forwarding is setup as listed above.

What router do you have, and how old is it?

Despite the fact that things were working before the reset, a lot of low- to mid-grade routers are quick to drop FFXI-related packets when the router table fills up. This partially has to do with how FFXI was originally designed—for narrowband (AKA dial-up) connections—and the router deciding that "these look small and unimportant, so I'm going to trash them."

This kind of problem is why cases like the one mentioned before yours don't completely cut off Internet access, as the other traffic gets through, but FFXI is dropped.

If you've had the router for quite some time, I'd recommend an alternative that better handles game, torrent, etc., traffic, such as:

    http://www.amazon.com/RT-N16-Wireles...4112358&sr=8-1

If you understandably don't have $90 laying around, this should serve you just as well:

I'm currently using a Linksys E3200. I'm pretty sure its been under a year since I started using it.

In your original post, you said that this was happening "again," which makes me believe it's happened before. If you bought the router less than a year ago, it should still be covered by its original warranty. After paying upwards of $100 for it, you shouldn't accept piss-poor performance.

There's a few things you can try, and I recommend doing them in this order:

    1. See if there's newer firmware, and if there is, flash to it. Just in case, backup your settings first.

    2. Have you tried contacting them and seeing what they say when you ask for a replacement? They apparently offer some kind of 90-day "complimentary support," but if it's covered for a year, I'd expect them to talk to you for a longer period than that. Otherwise, how would you act on a year's worth of warranty coverage?

    3. Start Googling your model number (E3200) and "router table" to see if you get results about clients being dropped. This is an example. You may be able to find effective troubleshooting methods that way.

    4. If those steps don't solve the problem for you, seriously consider researching and indulging in the glory of DD-WRT.

The first time was when it was first set up. Setting up all the port forwarding and the static IP was what fixed that in the end.

I'll look into the steps you listed, hopefully one of them will fix it.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions, its greatly appreciated!
