Answering machine issue

So our house has 2 phones, one is upstairs in a computer room and another is downstairs in my computer room. For a long time we have used the upstairs one as the answering machine where all messages go and get stored...but for some reason the downstairs machine has now just taken over the function. Didn't tweak anything with the phone at all, it just now receives all of the messages and I have no clue how to set it so the upstairs phone takes back its god given duty of storing our phone messages.

Anyone run into this issue before?

Just to get it out of the way; OMG WHY DO YOU STILL HAVE A LAND LINE?

As to answer your question.. it should just be as easy to disable the function on the downstairs one, and the upstairs one will take over. You could also set the "rings before going to vm" higher on the downstairs one.

Downstairs one is a shitty radioshack phone and I cant even figure out how to turn off the answering machine function. The upstairs one has a simple button you push to turn off/on. I unplugged the downstairs one, went upstairs and cycled the upstairs on/off/on and then went and plugged back in the downstairs one...

and yeah..I fucking hate land lines but living with fiance's parents and they dont want to change to VoIP service.
