At least 3 dead in Portland-area mall shooting

8:59PM EST December 11. 2012 - PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police say three people are dead, including the gunman, after a shooting at a mall in the Portland, Ore., area.

Clackamas County sheriff's Lt. James Rhodes says the gunman fatally shot two people, and another person was wounded, in the Tuesday afternoon shooting at the Clackamas Town Center.

Rhodes says the gunman is also dead but he did not say how he died.

Hundreds of holiday shoppers and store employees evacuated the mall after the shots rang out around 3:30 p.m. Many others hid in stores, and Rhodes says deputies are going through the mall to get them out.

Kira Rowland told KGW-TV that she was shopping at Macy's with her infant when the shots started.

"All of a sudden you hear two shots, which sounded like balloons popping," Rowland told the station. "Everybody got on the ground. I grabbed the baby from the stroller and got on the ground."

Rowland said she heard people screaming and crying.

"I put the baby back in the stroller and ran like hell," Rowland said. "It was awful. It was shots after shots after shots like a massacre.

"It was just awful."

Holli Bautista, 28, said she was shopping in the Macy's for a Christmas dress for her daughter when she heard a two or three pops that sounded like firecrackers.

"I heard people running and screaming and saying 'Get out, there's somebody shooting'," she told The Associated Press. "It was a scene of chaos."

Bautista said the Macy's opens into the food court area, where it was reported the shootings took place. Bautista said it sounded like the shots were coming from that direction.

Once Bautista made it out of the mall, police officers were directed her and the other shoppers across the street to another shopping center.

As she looked across the street, Bautista said she could see hundreds of police officers, firefighters and emergency workers pouring in.

"They're coming in from multiple different agencies. There's tons of ambulances lined up," she said.

Macy's employees Pam Moore and Austin Patty told the AP the shooter was short, with dark hair, dressed in camouflage. He had body armor and a rifle and was wearing a white mask, they said.

"I heard about 20 shots and everyone hit the ground," Moore said. "That's when we all just ran."

Spooky thing is, we might've. My family usually hits the mall when we get together. Was just chance that we didn't this time. It's so crazy. Clackmas town center always seemed really safe. You never think shit like this will happen to places near you.

The real rub is that the Clackamas Town Center is a "Gun Free Zone" meaning you are not legally allowing to CCW inside. And the question is how the fuck did a guy with a AF-15 rifle just manage to waltz right in without being tackled by 20 guards at once? I've entered the mall in Medford, OR with a concealed Sig that had zero print and had a guy chase me down within five minutes. Got escorted out and had the actual cops sic'd on me who would've loved to fistfuck me raw until they saw my CCW and that the door I entered didn't have a sign printed in clear view.

He didn't just waltz in. He entered from Macy's and ran through the store firing into the air creating panic from the start. When he got to the food court, he continued firing until his gun jammed. After that, the details are sketchy and there is no clear understanding of how he ended up dead. They (Clackamas County PIO) say he died from an apparent self inflicted wound.

My family all lives within 5 miles of that mall and regularly go there. My sister's boyfriend got a frantic call from his ex-wife saying the guy next to her was just shot in the head and she (the ex-wife) had locked herself in a back room in one of the stores in the mall. Only 3 injuries/deaths in a mall with several thousand people in it is extremely lucky.

Edit: Also, Don't believe anything you read from The Oregonian about this incident unless they cite a reliable source. Their editors have been making up their own stories based on wild speculation from scared witnesses. If you want accurate info about this, go to Clackamas County Sheriff Office, KGW or OPB. They are reporting much more accurate info and leaving the panicked accounts out of their stories.

Factors of the shooter having terrible aim, terrible taste in guns (srsly a JAMR-15 in the last two shootings?), and clearing the jam by looking down the barrel made it less worse than it really could've been.
