I was looking through ign.com and came across this article [link deleted] and think the making of a classic final fantasy game would be a good idea. With the way 12 and 13 went, can it really get much worse?

Classic like make go back to 2d with the old atb back? nah, mostly because there are a TON of spinoffs that already exist under the final fantasy name and do moderately well but its pretty dated.
They experimented with type-0 and hopefully they put the direction of a new numbered title there since it does so many things right. 12 was a stupid offline grindan mmo with the story and characters being weak. Thirteen was a movie with auto battle, the gameplay didn't kick in till chapter 11 and why did I have to wait till the end to unlock the full battle system. 13-2 looks wonderful with all of the focuses on gameplay at least.
I have no doubt that they could make a good retro FF series and have it sell well but I don't think it should be a main numbered series. Maybe a spin off series instead?
Reason:
Remember back in the day before FFXIII came out and it decided the fate of console wars, sparked flames across the internet when it was revealed on the *360, and well was really hyped and sold a lot?
*Remember this at E3 2008?
One of the reasons FFXIII was so hyped was because it's:
1. Final Fantasy (a numbered series).
2. More importantly it had the graphics and was taking full advantage of the latest (console) hardware! Graphics attract people.
Well if they restore their image with FFXIII-2, FF Versus 13, and FFXIV 2.0 that could happen again (FFXV becoming super hyped like FFXIII. Though definitely make sure FFXV has towns or else...).
(FF Type-0 has already been shown to be successful.)
I don't think sprite based graphics will be as hyped inducing as something like FFXIII.
Gameplay and story matters (definitely) but people not only want good gameplay but good graphics and voice acting (especially Vanille's awesome voice).
(Hence why people always want to FF6 and FF7 to be remade. Why do people want them remade if they think gameplay and story is the only thing that makes a game? Well people want that and more like voice acting and stuff).
tl;dr - I think a retro FF series would work well but I think they should make a spin off rather than a main numbered series. Main number series should be known for high quality and high budget and maximum hype will be achieved (as long as towns are in the game).
A high-budget, back-to-the-roots single-player numbered game that is executed well is just what this franchise needs.
I think something similar to FF9 would be great, like how they took from a lot of previous FF's and meshed it together with new things. A new game with the job system and an optional co-op or online interaction in some form (but not required or anything, don't want another MMO). I don't think they should appease the FPS meatheads though, classic was always nice.
So you mean SquareEnix should pull a Mega Man 9?
Some snippets:
Although the game was developed for modern consoles, Mega Man 9 features familiar 8-bit visuals and audio similar to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) as a "retro" throwback to the earliest entries in the franchise. According to its producers Keiji Inafune and Hironobu Takeshita, the development team intentionally made the graphics, sound, and gameplay of Mega Man 9 as simple as possible to adhere to the likeness of the fan and critical favorite Mega Man 2, released in 1988. Mega Man 9 was a commercial success and received mostly positive reviews from the press.EDIT: You referring to Op/first reply/2nd replyAccording to Inafune, the simple fun of a classic Mega Man game "doesn't fit into the grandiose and expansive world that the consumer gaming industry has become, and so you have to make games that match the current expectations". He also believed that pushing for the creation of a Mega Man in the style of the original "would be quickly criticized for things like being simplistic, outdated, or too expensive", thus making it too difficult to develop such games in the current climate.
I always felt that a SNES version of new FF's would be cute and awesome.
Would people bitch about remakes though?
I personally hope that XV isn't developed by Kitase's team.
They need a FFV remake the PS1 version sucked
None of this back to basics or classic bullshit.
Keep moving forward and trying new things, that's what I loved about FF in the first place.
Beat me to the punch.
If I want to play the classics, I'll play the classics.
The instant they stop trying new stuff is the instant I stop buying new FF games.
That doesn't mean that cameos and references to the past games aren't welcome (see: FFIX), but that shouldn't excalate to a shameless ripoff of an old game.
I agree, those characters were weak as fuck. I played and beaten all 13 final fantasy games and even my FF11 character has way more story then the FF12 characters lol.
FF12 is the worse in the numbered series and even though I count FFX-2 as a spinoff and not a numbered series.... x-2 was even better then 12. 12 was horrible and im not a star wars fan anyway.
I'll never really get the love for IX. It just seemed... unmemorable.
I wasn't able to get a feel on the characters on 12.
Only Ashe that i loved
I need to force myself to finish it
Did anyone have any doubts that a thread about a FF game that is yet to be announced would turn into bitching about which FFs are better than which?
My only wish for FFXV is for them to announce the damn thing and stop wasting resources on FF14 2.0.
Bitching aside, my nigga Hiroyuki Ito better get his ass on FFXV. That'll make it a great game despite what some others may think in this thread... :/
Speaking of Ito, wtf is he doing? He finished XII:IZJS and then basicaly disappeared.
