Shadow of the Eternals, a spiritual successor to Silicon Knights’ Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Reqiuem for GameCube, is in development at Precursor Games, an IGN-exclusive teaser trailer has revealed.

The game will be crowd-funded, with a campaign set to launch on Monday, May 6.

Silicon Knights boss Denis Dyack is involved, according to IGN, which will host a full reveal, including gameplay and platforms, on Monday and Tuesday.

But the latter may have leaked ahead of the time.

A cached page on Precursor’s website reveals the game is being targeted for Wii U and PC, while “other platforms” may be considered in the future. It will be released in episodes (at least 12, it seems), each offering approximately two to four hours of play time, and launch in Q3 2014. Approximately $1.1 million is needed to fund the project.

Here’s a bit about the story:

When Detective Paul Becker is called to one of the bloodiest gang massacres in Louisiana state history, only two survivors remain from a brutal conflict between two rival cults. As Becker begins his interrogations of the suspects, their combined recollections will uncover the truth about the ‘Ancients’.

Shadow of the Ancients is a sequel to the critically acclaimed Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Reqiuem. Featuring an ensemble cast of heroes and villains, the game will span over 2500 years of history throughout Egypt, England, Hungary, and the United States. Players will question the perception of reality as they try to balance the mechanics of combat, magick, and sanity events to progress through the adventure.

Shadow of the Ancients will take players on a memorable journey throughout time; weaving historical fact with disturbing fiction to create an experience unlike any other.

Eternal Darkness was one of those games I always wanted to play but never got the chance and now it's getting a sequel. I see they're taking the "episodic" route a la Walking Dead.

Precursor Games has launched the official crowd-funding campaign for the Friday-teased Eternal Darkness successor Shadow of the Eternals.

The campaign confirms earlier leaks that it is an episodic action-adventure game, with the first episode slated for a Q3 2014 release across Wii U and PC.

The CryEngine 3-powered game is set to feature an “ensemble cast” and span over 2,500 years of human history. Precursor promises “players will question their own perception of reality as they progress through this mind-altering psychological horror.”

To complete the project, the studio needs $1.5 million. As of press time, the campaign has crowd-sourced just over $16,000. Those that chose to fund the project, however, should note that, as per its Terms of Use, “a donation cannot be cancelled or returned once it has been completed, whether or not Precursor Games completes the Game or fulfils the specified reward.” Also, “Precursor Games is under no obligation to complete the Game, or in the event completion is impossible, return any of the donations it has received.”

Eternal Darkness was ok. Wouldn't call it amazing. The concept of it was interesting though with the insanity meter. If they can take that idea and really polish it, I think it'd turn out pretty nice.

You People Didn't Throw Money at Us, So we Are Going to Try this Again

Since we announced this Kickstarter campaign we have seen more support from our community than we had ever hoped for. Along with this support has come a host of a new exciting opportunities that will make the game better than we envisioned. As a result, we have chosen to temporarily take down the Shadow of the Eternals crowdfunding campaigns on both Kickstarter and our own website on Thursday, June 6.

This doesn’t mean we are going away — far from it. We’ll be re-launching the Kickstarter in just a few short weeks with a reveal of these exciting new developments.

As we’re closing the current Kickstarter campaign not a single dime from this campaign will be removed from supporters’ accounts and everyone from our website’s crowdfunding campaign will receive full refunds via PayPal. As we re-tool our campaign and continue development, the forums on our site will remain open and active and any interested fans can still join the ‘Order of the Unseen’ to see our progress and join in the fun of creating content for the game themselves.

I think they're asking for way too much. It may be what they need, but the interest and trust in Dyack isn't there anymore. Should have done a sequel instead of Too Human.
