Is there something odd about the graphics?

I'm not sure how to accurately phrase this, but does anyone think ARR's graphics look "off"? I mean in the sense that the lighting, texture, and effects are all pretty, but there's a certain lack of grit, or depth that keeps distracting me. I played 1.0 for a short time and remember it feeling more natural.

Comparing what I'm seeing in ARR to say, FFXI; where the aesthetics there are much more immersive.

I think I know what you mean, but I can't fully describe it.

However, I do not like the emotions. It's too robotic/not smooth. You would emote, and then quickly default back to idle/normal in a very unnatural style or movement, much like a robot.

The textures and bump mapping are of lower quality than 1.0. They've said in the DX11 patch those qualities will be improved.

I play at maximum settings at 1600p and the game looks fantastic in my eyes, for an MMO at least. I was streaming to a friend yesterday, and tried several different downscaling methods to make the game look prettier for a friend, and he still ended up saying he though the characters would look better or have more depth/detail and was disappointed with the models. I zoomed in for him and he said they looked a lot better but still expected more.

Expected more in what sense? As opposed to what other MMO that he is playing?

While the graphics in XIV are amazing.. just something about XI that is much more "real" or something, I cant really word it either. XI it just sort of feels you are a part of it from the inside, while in XIV it's like you're looking in from the outside. IDK.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

PC Max. These pics I have look great, don't get me wrong.

It's hard to describe and I can only sense whatever it is when actually playing. Something that keeps taking my focus away and wondering what exactly is causing it. Maybe the DirectX 11 patch will help like mentioned.

I think that can be attributed to the UI. There was a lot less going on in XI's, and the relevant stuff that we paid attention to all the time were, for the most part, Windower add-ons. In this, while you can certainly declutter it, the standard HUD has a ton of shit going on, most of which is relevant at any given moment--amplified because of constantly needing to monitor the GCD. So, where in XI you spent alot of time looking at the game and glancing at the party menu or your recasts, in XIV you're watching the game through your hotbars.

Or, at least, that's my take on it.

I'm trying to figure that out myself, he mentioned how much better they looked when I wasn't zoomed out so maybe it was that plus non1080p stream. When zoomed out the characters near you seem to pop a little more to see them better, and might be brighter, and that could have been it because characters a little out of range or in the distance seem to look more natural.

ARR is without doubt gorgeous... but i do think I know where you're coming from.

among other things like the points made about the presence of the UI.. i think XIV does come across as more fantasy than immersive.. or how should I say.. it looks and feels too fantasy to be real for most people.. and lacks the balance of realism that an older FF of a similar aesthetic (FFXII) had.

XI on the other hand looks rather good for its time, but i suppose required less of a suspension of disbelief to appreciate its world (generally). with that in place its easier to get into, but visually speaking a lot of places can actually be rather bland or normal looking.

as for the models.. i don't think theres much uncanny valley going on. the in-game models do have a bit more of a robotic sense of movement.. but people generally accept that these days. what I think the problem could be is that the important characters are.. very vanilla.. as far as movements are concerned cf. FFXI. XI relied heavily on text (speech habits, mannerisms, accents of individuals) as well as movements and spasms to build a character. XIV so far does the former for ethnic/racial/cultural groups but not so much individuals.. and they don't move very much - its like they just stand there and deliver their lines. They do have voice acting but so far its been very generic. to kinda borrow from another industry's lingo.. it feels like the characters lack warmth.

In some ways its kinda like comparing random cutscenes between FFXIII and XIII-2 (srsly, its rather interesting to see what each focus on). I do believe it will get better as the artists and devs get better working with XIV, just as XI level of quality in cutscenes dramatically improved over the years from vanilla days to WotG.

The playable characters feel very... plastic and too perfect. It's like noticing when someone has been airbrushed in a magazine. It's the only way I can describe XIV in comparison to XI in that it lacks the grit that the former title had regarding its characters.

As for the personalities and immersion factor? The individual random NPCs are much more rich and true to the fantasy world they live in regarding their mannerisms and reasoning for doing things but the important NPCs feel like they're going through the motions, devoid of any of the "wow" factor that is supposed to denote an important NPC. A quest may mention something like goobbue shit, cactuar piss or wanting to bang some other NPC while talking about starting a business which naturally humors me and gives life to a fetch quest. Then I head back to the Scion HQ and listen to characters who legit feel like they're reading off fantasy trope queue cards. Cmon.

I really think I've connected more with random questhub NPCs than the main cast and that isn't supposed to happen. The farmer asking me to pick apples seems more interesting than the group saving the world. But yeah, XIs NPCs were pretty bad in the OG/Zilart era so there is room for improvement. Lots.

I see it to. I think it's just that everything looks way too clean. I mean in Uldah, for a desert city, everything just looks brand new.

As stated above, it's probably what's referred to as "Uncanny Valley". In general, the more Human-like something is, the more people are attracted to it. However, there exists a point along the progression where attractiveness, in general, takes a huge nosedive, and people instead become repulsed or uncomfortable with it. It's the point where things are super realistic, but something is just "off", and it nags at you subconsciously. It's probably the teeth.

What bothers me the most is when it's raining and lightning... I feel like when the screen lights up for the brief moment lightning strikes- my computer is crashing.
Not trying to complain either... Cause the graphics are great.
But I have a sense of what you are talking about.
