Nice NAS - A Storage Thread

Been looking at alternatives for a simple NAS for awhile now. I used to use an old NetApp, but it's pretty much overkill for what I need, so i've been looking for a more simple solution.

I've used just a PC hooked up with some external drives before; it gets the job done, but that doesnt really cut it any more.

Most of the NAS devices ive looked at are pretty pricey, even for just the bay itself, but when I started to look again recently I found these guys http://www.seagate.com/external-hard...twork-storage/

Unloaded for all the things it offers it seems to be a really good price http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822178331 and loaded with 2x4TB isnt too far off http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822178334 but it's probably a better deal to buy the disks seperatly.

I've heard fairly good reviews about the Seagate stuff so I might be moving forward on that along with 2x4TB in a Raid1. 4TB of actual stuff I need should last a while, but beyond that, any good NAS options for anything above that?


What about you guys? What devices do you use to backup/share your data with your LAN? What RAID works for you? What HDDs do you find the best?

I have a Synology DS212 and I absolutely love it.

Other than being a network storage device, it's also a torrent server, media server, photo server, VPN, SSH/SFTP, backup server (works with OSX Time Machine, and supports Amazon S3 and Glacier)... I would absolutely recommend this device (this year's model is DS213)

I'll second that, Synology products work perfectly out of the box.

esata, usb3, individual power. I like it because you can just power up the drive you want to actually access.

I have the Synology DS1511+ and I swear by it (the newest model is the DS1513+). I'm running 8TB of RAID6 on that thing and it works like a champ. I'm down to <500GB of storage though, so I'm either going to need to buy an expansion unit or start deleting media.

Looking in to this again after re-evalurating my needs.
Essentially I am going to be needing about 10tb of space, holding non critical data.

So, my new question is.. anyone have any recommendations for a good JBOD enclosure?
I figure I can use any NAS out there, but then i'm paying for all of its nice features.

I'm just looking for something I can hook multipule 4tb drives in to, and connect via ethernet. Obviously there will have to be some NAS features there for that to work, but I dont want anything fancy. Paying for an actual NAS capable of RAIDing 10tb costs way too much.

Currently I just use a laptop, usb drives, and shares, but i'm wondering if theres a little bit of a better setup that might not use as much power; I dont like having the laptop on 24/7, but it's worked well so far.

Number of ways to do this, but i'm cheap.

Semi-serious question, what the fuck do you need 10TB for? I have 3TB and I think that's pretty overkill. As for your NAS solution, if you plan on going any higher than 4 or 5 TB, it's price will double or triple.

Yeah, thats why i'm trying to avoid a full blown NAS with lots of NetApp type options, along with RAID and all that jazz. I just want a smart enclosure.

Idealy less than 200, but fat chance, lower the better, but i'd be willing to pay more as long as it's good.

I have about 5tb and steadily growing from BD quality movies, along with near uncompressed music and pictures. This will act as my storage until I will actually dump money in to my home theater / network when I'll actually get something more business class.

I'm at 15 TB in my tower used, because I keep the video library there so we don't have to swap discs, just search the network, plus ISOs of install discs for the same reason. I'm out of drive bays and USB ports now...

If you want cheap, but capable of 10+TB, this is probably the cheapest reliable option: Lenovo IX4-300D
I really would recommend getting 4 4TB drives and putting them in a RAID5 array for data redundancy. My experience is that the more mechanical drives you have, the more prone one of them is to failure. And recovering from data loss is never fun.

Per the NAS spec sheets, either of these drive types are recommended:
WD Red 4TB NAS HDD - $189.00
Seagate 4TB NAS HDD - $169.00

Total expenditure: $900.82 with cheaper Seagate drives.

I currently run a Drobo 5N in my home, stocked full with 5x 3TB WD Red HDDs and a 256GB mSATA SSD for Hot Data Caching.

No complaints at all about anything, rw speed is generally in the ballpark of 100MBps over LAN, able to handle multiple transfers and stream HD video with no degradation in performance.
Fair amount of options available and DroboApps provide additional functionality (ie. iTunes server, plex, auto backup, etc)

It's a little bit more in the expensive side though, with the chassis ruining about $550 USD before you've even bought drives.
Very user friendly experience.
