    C++ Programming

    So I'll be starting C++ in the spring and was wondering if any programmers here could recommend some books to help me get a leg up on the course. I'll be taking it along with calculus so any advice would surely be appreciated. Major is computer engineering, no prior programming experience.

    Get your syllabus (either this or last semester's) and see if your prof lists any concepts/objectives.
    if concepts are listed: search the concepts. You are now ahead of your class. Happy face.
    else: Prof might be a dick if nothing was listed. Frowny face. Read a dummy's guide like Vandole mentioned.

    Bonus points: keep track of the number of students in your class. See how many dropped by the drop date. It might be more than half. Hope you're not one of them.

    Majority of my programming courses were like that (half dropping) though most of it is due to not having the time to put into the class. You'll need your time in the maths (do not neglect this unless you know your shit), so be sure to budget enough time for your programming. Unless the concepts seem intuitive to you, you'll need it.

    Codecademy, Coursera, learn to code the hard way. All good websites to look up

    Thanks for all the responses. Should I rent my intro to Java book or just purchase it for future reference? Using it for two semesters anyway.

    If you rent it, I'm 99% sure it's only good for 6 months. Therefore you would have to pay for it twice. Might be better to buy the hardcopy.

    I'd also suggest looking into C some, too. And while I wouldn't suggest diving right in and learning them, I'd at least look up pointers (maybe after a week or two in the class) so they aren't such a mindfuck when you are introduced to them.

    As a student in any computer discipline...don't ever pay for books . Ebooks and pdfs yo, score that shit.

    Also if you're brand new to programming. Take like 2 weeks and learn python/ruby. They are very easy, especially Ruby, and get you a solid base where things like Assembly and C programming will make a lot more sense. I also feel like the majority of math you'll "need" to know will just be logic. Maybe it's me, but college level math didn't teach me much to reflect back to when I started scripting in the past few months.
