GPU upgrade

Considering updating from a 460 GTX - 760 GTX.

Basically i know this card isn't top of the line or whatever, but i have an alienware that i'm none to confident about replacing the 525w PSU on, and most of the newer cards require a much bigger PSU.

So looking at a 760, wondering what the general consensus is, Asus, EVGA, MSI or Gigabyte.

Other cards etc that you think would be more suitable would be appreciated thanks.

actually they use a very similar amount of power, so you should be fine with the same power supply.

If you really think your PSU isn't powerful enough, try this. Round the result up to the next 50W step and add another 50W, and you have a solid guideline for what your system really needs. And unless you want to run SLI or have tons of drives and expansion cards, 525W should be more than enough.

My old rig was running on a 500W PSU and cycled through a 260GTX, a 460GTX and a 7850 in the ~4 years i used it, never had problems with power even though it was running with a pretty power-hungry AMD processor, 3 HDDs, 2 ODDs and some other stuff. Led to an idle consumption of ~100W...
Newer hardware is more efficient and needs less (at least on idle), and for GPUs you can read the max consumption from the power plugs they need. PCIe specification is pretty strict, so the manufacturers tend to over-provision the available power rather than drawing too much from the PSU. PEG slot delivers 75W, 6pin-PCIe 75W, 8pin 150W.

Thanks for the advice, and yea i have 1hdd, 1 cd drive, headset, kb/m, monitor and modem.. so not all that much i guess

according to that link you provided it's about 400ish, rounding up with my current card.

I have a 750w pc power & cooling psu that runs 2 ssd's, 2 regular hdd's, 4 88cfm fans, my i7 cpu, and 2x gtx 580's in SLI. 750 is plenty for virtually any single card, as long as you get a 750w that is decent.

Um... Did you even read the previous posts? 750W for a single-GPU setup is overpowered and a waste of money. Even with a sh*tload of add-on stuff and a horribly inefficient CPU/MB combo 500W is more than enough, in most cases even 400W would be enough.

Can't stress it too often, the Enermax calculator delivers good estimates and helps you save money in the long run, on purchase of the PSU as well as reduced energy waste on idle consumption.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but i purchased the 760 gtx and now unfortunately when i boot the computer i get my bios screen then the monitor loses all signal, i'm using a x6 pin and 2 pin setup since i only have 2 6pin's, i've tried a different PCI slot with no difference, my old 460 gtx still works also.

Any idea's?

Ok it booted with basic window's drivers in my second PCI slot, however i have some graphical errors on ff14 (shimmering lines in the centre of the screen) and the fans seem to be spooled up to 9000 even with no games running

This is my first time swapping cards, and it all seems to be going wrong ;;

Um... I guess your card has an 8-pin connector? At least most GTX 760 cards i found have one.
When you only have 6-pin plugs, you'll need a special Y cable that merges the 2 6-pin into an 8-pin. Otherwise your card won't get enough power.

it does need an 8pin, however my psu only has x2 6pin, the card needs 6pin and 8pin.

However it also accepts x2 6pin and 2pin, which is what i'm currently using, it shipped with the y cable that merges, but i don't have another 6pin

Like i said it's running atm, i'm just having strange lines on screen, almost like interference, and the fan is loud as hell, while idling.
