SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Skydance Media, a diversified media company that creates elevated, event-level entertainment for global audiences, today announced that it has acquired the global live action rights to Sword Art Online (SAO), the smash hit Japanese novel and anime franchise, in partnership with KADOKAWA Corporation.

Skydance plans to fast-track the launch of an all-new franchise by developing and producing the first-ever live action SAO TV series. Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Shutter Island, Terminator Genisys) will write the pilot episode and serve as an executive producer alongside David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross.

SAO is a global franchise based on the popular light novel series of 22 books by author Reki Kawahara, which have collectively sold over 19 million print copies worldwide. The novels have been spun off into nine comic adaptations, two anime television series, a video game and merchandise program, and – most recently – an animated film set to be released in Japan in 2017.

The all-new Skydance Television series will follow a brilliant young beta tester Kirito and his group of friends when they are trapped – alongside 10,000 other people – in a next-generation virtual reality online role-playing game. The game is a world unto itself: filled with sword fighting, monsters and mystery, where the stakes are life and death. Kirito and an ensemble of diverse characters must fight their way through this hostile environment while making lives for themselves in the fantastical world that is Sword Art Online. Following its television series, Skydance plans to launch a first-of-its-kind SAO virtual reality experience through Skydance Interactive.

Laeta Kalogridis is a film and television writer-producer. Her writing work includes the first X-Men, Tomb Raider, Scream 3, Alexander, Night Watch, Bionic Woman, Pathfinder and Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island, which she also executive produced. She worked alongside Skydance as writer and producer on 2015’s feature film Terminator Genisys. Additional producing credits include James Cameron’s Avatar and White House Down. Kalogridis has a first-look and consulting arrangement with Skydance and is currently writing and executive producing the studio’s sci-fi television series Altered Carbon for Netflix. She is repped by WME.

Skydance Media is known for producing Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Star Trek Into Darkness and Jack Reacher.

Compared to Altered Carbon...

The second thing, in terms of what I would like to see for SAO, is that I feel it’s a much more aspirational story about hope and much less about darkness than Altered Carbon is. Asuna is sort of the savior of the world, in my mind and in the mind of the showrunners, [Patrick] Massett and [John] Zinman, who are doing the show. There’s a real ability to explore a fantasy-based The Lord of the Rings / Game of Thrones kind of world through the lens of these people who are trapped in it and don’t necessarily want to be there, but who have to learn how to survive in it. What I’m most interested in is all of the human stories, when everything else falls away and it’s life or death, in a place where you were never expecting to be trapped. That’s what I loved about the original anime and that’s what I love about the live-action adaptation, as we are currently envisioning it.

I mean at least in this case we know they can't make it that much worse can they? Might be the formula for making a good live action!

Think I'd be interested if they did the more fleshed out route of the LN "remake" I've heard some bring up elsewhere, but if it's somehow just going to turn into grrl power Asuna, it'll be a pretty quick pass as just focusing on her cuts out a lot of the other aspects of the Aincrad arc. Among them Kirito's fuck up with the lowbie guild or the christmas event cocktease.

God those were such disappointments. Like all this setup for character defining moments that should define them for at least the rest of the season if not life annnnnnnnnnnnndddddddddddd immediately it's like it never happened. That's one of the things I really liked about the abridged version as those things last more than the episode they are in. Actually in a lot of ways it fixed several of the flaws in the series
