Masters of the Universe (June 5, 2026) - Daryl is Worse than Skeletor

Looks like the project finally hired writers to pen the screenplay.

    http://www.heatvisionblog.com/2010/0...enwriters.html

Mike Finch and Alex Litvak, the duo who wrote the upcoming "Predators" reboot, have been brought aboard to pen "Masters of the Universe" for Columbia.

The studio picked up movie rights to the 1980s Mattel toy property in the fall, when Mattel and Warner Bros. parted ways after the sides couldn't agree on a creative vision.

The addition of the rising writers is the first major move on the property and signals the project is being rebuilt from the ground up. While at Warners, "Masters" went through several writers and in latter stages had John Stevenson, who co-helmed "Kung Fu Panda," attached to direct.

Getting the go-ahead to tackle any major toy-brand film can be tricky. Depending on the property, writers and directors need to get a thumbs-up from the studio, which then has to win approval from the toy company. In the case of "Masters," Mattel has story approval.

In their pitch, the scribes attempted to balance a treatment that would convince the studio it was cinematic and keep the toy company satisfied that its characters were being portrayed appropriately.

The '80s show, "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe," centered on blond warrior Prince Adam, who, after uttering the magic words "By the power of Grayskull, I have the power," turned into the heroic He-Man. He and his allies -- Battle Cat, Man-at-Arms and Orko -- defended their planet Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor, who week after week attempted to conquer the fortress Castle Grayskull, which imbues He-Man with his powers.

Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch of Escape Artists are producing.

The Verve-repped Finch and Litvak made a splash last year with "Medieval," which jolted the spec market when it sold to New Regency for big bucks. That script scored the duo the coveted gig of writing the Robert Rodriguez-produced "Predators," helping the long-in-development sequel go from script to screen in just more than a year.
I think they have a lot of work if front of them to update MOTU without fucking up the original story. Hopefully they find a balance between too many loin cloths and going the route of black leather spandex. The original was a fun movie but obviously a little disappointing, so i'm looking forward to what this could be.

The original one was one of the best movies ever made for it's particular genre.

(80's timeportal movies, see: MoTU, Time Barbarians, etc, and more recently, hot tub time machine).

Dunno if i'm digging the current trend of bringing back stuff from the greatest decade ever, if they're going to usher out crap like G.I. Joe and Transformers 2. It's nothing new though, happens every 20 years or so.

First of all, "80's time portal movie" isn't a genre lol. MotU is a Sci-fi/Fantasy/Adventure movie... And it's a bad one. It was bad in the 80s, and it's bad now. It really is that simple.

Meh, it wasn't good but it was fun. Conan meets Star Wars.

    First off, you're wrong.

A genre is nothing more than a categorization of two or more entities, it really is that simple! Is there 2 or more? Do I want to label them? Omg I have a genre!

Many eras had genres that were specific to them, 70s and early 80s saw "Blaxploitation" emerge as a genre.

80s specifically had the "time portal movie", which were all plot variations of "Strange man in a strange place"(they didn't necessarily have to travel through time), there were literally hundreds of them.

MoTU is pretty much the best one, because they were all universally bad.

Course you'd know that if you weren't culturally illiterate.

    Write it?

    I lived it.

MoTU was an autobiographical retelling of my life.

But no really, I was just calling you out for being stupid lol@ "it's not a genre!"

Yes this quite the necro, but this is how long the film has been in development.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Adam Nee and Aaron Nee (Band of Robbers) to Direct, Synopsis released
In the upcoming film, King Randor will be presented as the great warrior-king of Eternia, a descendant of the Grayskulls, and the father of two sons: Adam and Keldor! As the film begins, Keldor is the chosen heir to the throne and his brother, Adam, is young, unfit and a bit of a black sheep.

Where Adam's relationship with his father is strained, Keldor is the epitome of a perfect son, beloved by his father...until the fate of Eternia is put on the line. With his kingdom on the line, Randor puts his people first, betraying Keldor, inciting the series of events that leads to him becoming the iconic Skeleton!

Did I nerd rage in this thread yet? No? Well, I'll keep it short then. I was and am a huge MoTU fan. That's a wildly varied take on the cannon story but I'm game for some twists. Still, presented right they could have gone with the more recent take of Keldor being Randor's brother and still have the Adam/Adora twins. Get a trilogy or some shit out of this with both He-Man and She-Ra to kick ass. Ah well. We've all see enough of our childhood get butt fucked by Hollywood over that last decade, so I can't say I'll be surprised when it happens to MotU. Sad, but not surprised.
