    Elite: Dangerous

Anyone tried this yet? I've been watching let's plays of it all week. I am gonna pick it up on steam friday when i get paid.

Basic premise is you're a spaceship captain in an open world space mmo.

I was surprised to see there wasn't a thread for this, I searched this forum and the mmo forum but couldn't find one.

There are tons of videos on youtube if you wanna check out more. This lets play is a bit boring since its the beginning of the game and goes through alot of what you'll need to know to start the game. No combat in this video, though I'll link another one below that does have a bit of combat.

The price is a little steep, and I rarely buy games for full price, but for some reason this game has its hooks in me.

So to elaborate a bit about everything you can do in the game.

From what I've seen there are quite a few different ships, and you can customize them based on the role you want to play in game.

So, if you want to be a trader, hauling goods from station to station for profit, you can certainly do that. You would start by adding cargo bays to your ship. If you're going to be a miner, you'd get a mining laser and some kind of refinery(forget whats its called in game) in addition to your cargo bay.

If you wanted to be a bounty hunter you'd obviously concentrate on weaponry and ship modules that make you more maneuverable.

There are various scanners as well, the coolest one I've heard about is called a wake scanner, if your bounty/target jumps out of your space, you can use a wake scanner to see which way he went.

There is apparently even a system to influence politics and take control of planets, and the space stations that orbit them.

Some ships are obviously better for doing certain tasks as thats they're made to do, like a hauler would be for trading, very little weaponry but tons of storage space, decent shields, probably terrible maneuvering. There are much smaller ships that are meant to be combat ships, but if you happen to want to do something else with that ship you can still outfit it anyway you want.

There are all sorts of different systems in your ship, and they're all located in different places depending on the ship you're in, so each ships cockpit feels unique.

There is also a third person camera mode called debug camera that is unmapped by default, however using it makes you vulnerable because you can see none of your ships cockpit systems.

What I really like about the game is that everything I've seen feels like its an immersive part of the game, while you're playing nothing feels like its just a menu added over the top of the game.

Just an FYI it isn't an mmo.

Why do you say that? There seems to be a persistent world that 100's or 1000's of players play on at once. I understand that some things are instanced but I've seen stations with tons of people surrounding them. mmo just means massively multiplayer online.

    aaaand: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/g...Dangerous.html

After further reading I can understand why you would say that now. All the actual multiplayer flight is done via p2p hosting, with a max of 32 players per instance.

This is the explanation I read:

There is only one server (in UK), that server is used to save game files, matchmaking, and background sim (market data and such). Each player is playing in a p2p network, matched by location (when possible). So in other words no latency issues. Every player is playing in the same universe but it is only possible for 32 people to be in a players instance. Think of it as a circle around each player as you move from one location to another, the server looks for other players that are in the same location and similar Real world location, it then pushes these players into the same instance. As people move in and out of the game location people will come and go, with an attempt to keep the player count at 32 (or what every your PC and connection can handle).

Its a little difficult to explain, but I hope that helped. Think of it as dynamic instances, like GW2, but with a smaller max count. Even that is not right as the instance follows you around, merging different players instances into a single one.

And on the flip side of it not being an mmo, if you want you can apparently restrict your instance down to just you for a solo gameplay. Guy at work said he loves it, fwiw. I've already bought into star citizen so I doubt I'll go into this one. I would be interested in seeing how the piloting feel compares to SC.

It is a fun game and the docking/undocking stuff is really immersive and satisfying to do it right quickly. I even went all out and bought a hotas because the 360 controller just wasn't doing it for me. It made a huge difference and the game was even more fun. Eventually I ended up returning the hotas because I felt guilty spending that much money on it and also because I knew it would sit and collect dust most of the time. That is not a fault of the game though, I just have a lot of other stuff going on.

Bottom line, if you are itching for a space flight sim you really don't have many choices, but Elite is a pretty good game regardless of your limited selection. Really looking forward to the next few years. Valkyrie and Star Citizen should be pretty great also.

Yea I have a cheap logitech joystick that cost me 30 bucks thats got twist yaw control, and a little throttle knob on the back.

I'd love to get a full hotas setup but like you said after a while it just sits there unused and they cost a decent chunk of change.

    http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Extre.../dp/B00009OY9U

thats the joystick i have, it has worked great for everything i've tried it with, bf4, warthunder is really all i've used it for. pretty excited to have another game to try with it.

Hoping my rent isn't out of my account when i get home from work tonight so i can buy this shiz a day early.

And yea I played the fuck out of kerbal space program, and while the amount of people in a particular instance may be limited to 32, its still a pretty cool way to program your multiplayer, seamless transitions between instances, matchmaking based on geographic location cross referenced with the people that are near your in game location.

I think it was a smart way to do it using the least amount of resources possible. That's not to say they can't up the player count in the future, or switch from p2p to server hosting if they need to expand.

I understand that you can go solo, but I'm not sure why you would want to, especially considering an internet connection is always required to be present even solo, thats usually the benefit of solo play, is you don't require an internet connection, so if you happen to be traveling someplace that has a shitty/nonexistant connection you can still play.

One other question I had is that I see people changing their hud colors. Is there a way to do that in the game or do you do that by modifying game files?

When I last played I think it was some xml configuration file they were modifying. If you google it I am sure there will be dozens of results about it as well as people sharing their color schemes.

I was bored so I googled it for you.

Youre da best. Thanks so much! I spent most of the weekend cleaning the house while fiance was away getting CE credits to keep her license, but i played this most of the weekend with a friend. We played alot of open play and towards the end we tried bounty hunting in a private group. Winging up to get bounties is great because if anyone in your group get the last shot on a bounty everyone in your wing gets a portion of it.

Im pretty happy with the game. There really is no story tho, just contracts you can pick up stations, but there are only so many. I cant recommend anyeone spend 60 bucks though until they add more content and maybe some kind of main storyline.

The only way I would say to buy this now is if youre wanting an amazing space sim that throws you into the galaxy with a spacecraft and a few credits, and says go and do what you will to the universe.

Now dont get me wrong, there are plenty of training missions to teach you how things work. Theres just no driving narrative in the game world forcing you to follow a linear path, the path is yours to make.

I just hooked up and configured my joystick, and this games controls got smooth as butter....

I've got a logitech extreme 3d pro, common joystick, 30-35 bucks on amazon, has everything tho, 12 buttons, 8 way hat switch, yaw twist, throttle stick on the back. This layout above gives you pretty much every single function you can think of. The only thing thats not really mapped is the galaxy/system maps.

Elite Dangerous will let you do multi key binds, so the basic idea is you press and hold one of the toggle buttons on the base, and then you have access to that color groups controls on the stick. The nice thing is that once you access a system menu on your ship, you no longer have to hold the toggle button, you can just use the controls of the control group that was selected without continuously holding the toggle at that point.

so the red group is for deploying things, hardpoints, landing gear, lights, whatever you want, i added heat sync to the unbound button

the orange is for engines so you can change where power goes to your ship on the hat switch(same as your arrow keys did before), engage fsd, use your engine boost, i added silent running to the unbound, cause i like to smuggle shit

its just such a good setup, i labeled the toggle buttons on my joystick, cause once i get those down i think there rest will come naturally, as everything seems to be an intuitive location for the most part.

oh the best part is if you want to use this thing, you have to do 0 configuration work outside of copying and pasting a preset file, selecting that preset in the controls menu, and customizing to your liking.

direct link to bind file(via reddit thread):

This is the binds file. To be placed in "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings"
a friend of mine is bringing his oculus dk1 over a bit later, gonna try to get it running with elite, i've read that you can do 1080p even with dk1

Been playing this quite a bit lately. Though still very casually cause work. Community goals are pretty nice though. Gives me an opportunity to feel like im playing a bigger part in the world, and your rewards are based on contributions. So its one of the things where the rewards are worth it. Most of the contracts arent worth doing unless youre stuck in a sidey or your morally bankrupt and dont mind running slaves.

I can't imagine it running very well on consoles, game is massive, and I can't imagine only playing with a controller. I use a controller at the moment (until I buy a joystick) but I also have my keyboard for a bunch of other little things. That being said, game is very good, very complex and hopefully they'll continue adding onto it before it hits that "well now I'm just doing the same things over and over" stage that most sandbox games inevitably get to. For the moment enjoying just flying around and seeing what happens.
