    Wifi mesh system opinions

    Greetings all,

So I'm looking to get a wifi mesh system for a house with a basement and a 2nd story. I've only ever lived in a single story so wifi coverage hasn't ever been an issue. I really want to be sure all the rooms have a signal for when we have guests and the like.

Anyone here have a good run with any particular brand, or just the concept itself? I was recommended Orbi by Netgear or Google Nest by my brother. I just want something simple and reliable. Any info, advice and experience appreciated!

I use a TPLink system. Works well for gigabit and has an easy to use app for controls.

I have a nearly 3000sqft house with a basement and 2nd floor. Asus router on top floor near the middle. I get great coverage throughout the house and about a half acre in every direction.

What would a mesh system do or why would you need one? Crazy concrete walls or something?

WiFi 6 speeds are highly dependent on distance from the source. 50-70 feet is enough to cut your speed in half especially depending on the number of obstructions between you and the router, 2.4 vs 5ghz band, etc. Mesh systems help alleviate this. You can maintain a connection within a huge range of a single router but that doesn't necessarily mean you will always be getting the best speeds.

I guess that makes sense most of my important devices are on 5G with the lesser devices on the 2.4 And that's why I haven't really noticed it or a need for it.

Yes, I currently use the TP-Link deco mesh system. The units work well - you can mix and match different models (even wifi 5 vs 6 models) as well, pretty much plug and play.

I think with my Asus router on Merlin I would just need to add a second one and bam it's mesh.

Not that I know what that is.

I'll look into the TP-Link system. Thanks for the info!
