Bard Song/Fire Spell lag

Every time a Bard song or Fire spell goes off I get a huge spike in FPS. I had this exact same problem with my old PC which had a 6600GT video card. The problem was solved on that rig by a driver change, going to the 66.93 drivers listed on the PlayOnline website. However with my new video card, 7600GS, the listed drivers do not solve the problem, 91.47.

I'm sure this is a driver issue as it fixed the problem on my old rig, I just can't seem to find the driver that works well with FFXI and a 7600GS. I've tried so many different drivers now I'm going freakin crazy. If anyone has the solution to this please respond. Thanks in advance.

That's odd, some people experience the opposite, with a huge dive in FPS.

As for me, I used to have an issue where Escape and Firaga would cause my game to freeze, but when I turned off SLI, things worked normally. I just chalk that up to FFXI not liking dual graphics cards.

I apologize, I worded that wrong. It's a drop in FPS when the song/spell goes off. Example, I maintain around 25-29 FPS in most areas of the game but when a song/fire spell goes off I drop to around 10 FPS just for a few seconds. Sorry about the wording in the original post.

I had the same problem with Tachi: Yukikaze, which really made me hate doing self light at Fafnir.

I had this problem when I used an nVidia card, since I switched to using an ATI it hasn't been an issue.

I have exactly the same problem. Unfortunately my Radeon 9800 pro died recently, and I went looking for a replacement, picked up a 7600GS just due to it being cheap and spec wise looking like it shoudn't even break a sweat on FFXI. Unfortunately I'm getting the same FPS dropoff druing all bard songs that you're mentoning, which makes tanking stuff a whole lot harder.

I tried messing around with the optimization settings, but haven't managed to find a combination that seems to work yet. I guess the next step is to work backwards through the drivers until we can find something that works smoothly.

I have had the same problem since I got a new nVidia card, and I'm a Bard so it really sucks ;(
